El Gato Feo coffee shop is THE place to go in the lower central village of Ajijic. It is conveniently located right next door to the Lake Chapala Society, a hub for ex-pats in the area. Their coffee is delicious (with our without caffeine) and they now have a large cupboard filled with the amazing pastries from the “French Bakery” in town. They added air-conditioning in 2024 which is SO welcome during the hot Spring and Summer months. This cafe feels like a hidden little gem. The vegan carrot cake we heard about and went to try is AMAZING! It is a bit pricey but so delicious that it made it worth it given how rich, moist, and satisfying it was. We also enjoyed a nice smoothie, which we greatly appreciated because it wasn't packed full of ice like in many places; rather, it had a nice flavor and a good consistency and temperature like a normal smoothie should. This is a wonderful cafe with delicious smoothies coffees, teas, and gluten-free options that are amazing. Super speed internet, cozy environment. Amanda has always been VERY attentive so the reviewer who said she was on the phone, something must have been going on that she needed to do that as she's always been lovely to everyone I've seen her interact with and what sent me in the first place was a recommendation from a local who said she pays her employees well.
