Maya Chuc. — Restaurant in Mérida

Fuimos a Maya Chuc buscando probar auténtica comida yucateca. Al llegar, solo había una mesa ocupada, y decidimos entrar porque el lugar luce rústico pero bien conservado. La persona en la entrada nos recibió de forma amable y nos asignó mesa rápidamente. Sin embargo, la atención por parte de los meseros dejó mucho que desear. Nos atendieron con una actitud apática, sin sonreír, y con lenguaje corporal que parecía reflejar molestia o aburrimiento.

Pedimos dos panuchos, un huevo revuelto, café y jugo de naranja. Aunque el lugar no estaba lleno, nuestros alimentos tardaron 25 minutos en llegar. Durante ese tiempo, otras mesas que llegaron después recibieron sus platillos antes que nosotros, lo cual nos pareció extraño. La comida es buena, pero la experiencia general fue opacada por la falta de amabilidad y eficiencia del servicio. Un lugar con potencial, pero necesita mejorar mucho en la atención al cliente.

We visited Maya Chuc hoping to try authentic Yucatecan food. When we arrived, only one table was occupied, and we decided to go in as the place looked rustic but well maintained. The person at the entrance welcomed us kindly and seated us quickly. However, the service from the young waiters was disappointing — they looked like they didn’t want to be there, with indifferent expressions and poor body language.

We ordered two panuchos, scrambled eggs, coffee, and orange juice. Even though the restaurant was mostly empty, our food took 25 minutes to arrive. During that time, several other tables that came in after us were served first, which felt odd. The food itself was good, but the overall experience was overshadowed by the unfriendly and inefficient service. The place has potential but needs serious improvement in customer service.

We waited for an hour and watched 4 tables (that arrived after we did) get their drinks and food before us, and 3 tables left due to no service or long waiting times. We did notice that foreign white visitors did get their food quickly ahead of other tables (including ours). Finally after an hour of no food (they took 20 min to even acknowledge us), we left. I worked as a server for 7+ years and I'm very lenient with waiting times but considering they were able to see and quickly serve international visitors, this just feels like a purposeful disregard for service and equality.

The Manager, Roberto, went above and beyond our expectations trying to satisfy my food requests... sending someone out to another of their restaurants to make something that wasn't on the menu for me (I had to follow a strict diet that day on doctor's orders). We were honestly blown away by how friendly and good the service was. The food was good, nothing amazing (not rating what I ate since it wasn't on their menu...but rating the dishes ordered by others), and the prices didn't seem to match the level of food...a bit pricey for how simple the dishes were. If it were not for the amazing service and fast kitchen, I would have...
