Visited for dinner on NYE 2019. As soon as we sat down in the garden, which had no space heaters on a 54 degree night, the waitstaff began walking the garden with smoke filled canisters with no explanation. Finally, after people started coughing and fanning the smoke away a waiter says. "It is for the mosquitos!" Hmm...Just be honest and say, "The sewer gas from outside is coming in so we must try to cover it up. Idiotic to blame it on those pesky cold weather mosquitoes.
While the menu was Prix Fixe, which was fine, there were No prices posted anywhere. And the waiters english/spanish became nonexistent when we asked. We order drinks that took an eternity, but I guess it was Delightful to see the drinks waiter 'Wall' dancing Instead of crafting a cocktail. It was 8:30pm and the restaurant was half full, we had a rotating crew of 3 or 4 waiters and servers who didn't communicate with one another, bringing out cheese, creama, and butter covered dishes even thought my allergy to dairy was explained in espanol when we were seated. It resembled one of those Restaurant Rescue shows on the Food Network, they needed a kitchen and service intervention! Maybe if there were more woman working here the all male staff would have a better understanding of food and service, because they were clueless. When we pointed out their screw ups there was no apology or attempt to correct the mistake. After initially standing about 18inches behind our backs, watching us eat then grabbing our plates that were only half eaten, 4 disappeared and stopped checking in completely. Eventually we would receive plates, quickly dropped off with no explanation of what they were.
The 5 course menu was "small bites," 3 of which I couldn't have because they kept forgetting to make them without dairy. After having flavor filled, exquisite meals during our trip this food tasted like the chef gave zero F's. Tepid flavor profile, cold food that should have arrived hot, and half cooked half raw salmon. I was ready to leave as the waiters show up to serve a cheesecake with cream...You DA's!
Get out of the business! There are taco stands in el Centro that serve better food, with a smile. After requesting the bill twice, an even more confused waiter arrived to ask if we paid our bill already?! Then he said you already paid, which we had not. When the $270 usd bill finally arrived I laughed...
I felt like we were robbed last night. We wouldn't even pay that at home in NYC for culinary perfection, but congratulations, we will make it our mission to spread the word that Huset is a definite 'skip' ...unless you have a fetish for paying too much for mediocre food and confused (but dancing) service.
Please submit your online application for "Restaurant Rescue" TV show, you need an intervention now! Also, please don't attempt to expand to...
Read moreI came here at the recommendation of American Express, much like several of the other reviewers. Given that this was our special night out, and how highly recommended this restaurant came, I really wanted to like this place. To give credit where due, the patio is simply awesome..I literally wish I had one like this at home.
Service started out very attentive and friendly and became less and less as it started getting busier.
Food was underwhelming overall...see the breakdown below
cocktails: Absolutely amazing. I had el Tuxpan, and it was quite nice. Not heavy on the mescal, but a good balance of sweet and smoky.
Appetizers: Burrata - quite tasty and the tomatoes were lovely! Aguachiles - again, lovely. I could have (and should have) just ordered this as my meal and been quite happy.
Mains: Ribeye - flavor was nice, but in general I have found cooking temperatures tend downward from US standards. ie, Medium Well here is more like Medium at home. The mole that came with the dish was nice, but the plantain sitting on top of it ruined it. Literally, the combination wasn't worth eating.
Robalo - recommended by the server, but it was bland. To the point of questioning whether it was seasoned at all. The salad dressing that accompanied the dish was quite nice, but really...if that is what I complimenting, it's hardly a compliment.
Sea bass - again, unseasoned. The "swede puree" (probably turnips) was nice...but again, that was better than the dish itself.
Side of Brussels sprouts - came out long after we finished our meals. We didn't even want it anymore. To add insult to the late arrival, they were mushy and totally over powered by a balsamic dressing. I'd skip these even if they arrived on time.
Given the less than stellar main courses, we opted against dessert...and got our check instead.
In summary, and piggy backing off what someone else said. This place is good, but the competition has grown and you can find better at a fraction of the cost nearby...like Lardo. I would go there and spend less...
Read moreLovely restaurant with great modern cuisine.
--- Dishes --- All dishes were very convincing, and elegantly presented. The sauce of the gnocchi was very lemonly and refreshing and the gnocchi themself boiled slightly too long, yet had a nice texture. The peach salad was great too, but rather go for the gnocchi if you need to choose.
The sea bass was the meal of the night - greatly presented and went amazingly with the sweet potato puree, the basil and fresh tomatoes. The steak was well done, yet could have had an included side.
The guava cheese cake was a highlight too - very refreshing, especially with the passion fruit.
The bread which was served along the dishes was also very fluffy, and served as a good medium for the sauces. However, as all dishes were presented in bowls, and no spoons were available, it was sometimes difficult to catch the sauces which were the stars of each of the dishes. Thus, ask for more bread to dip them :)
--- Service --- The waiters were friendly, yet got a bit confused with the dishes as some of us only had a main, or two appetizers. Despite clarifying when each dish should come, they brought every dish at once (except for the sea bass) which was a bit unfortunate. We also had 4 different people serving us.
--- Ambience --- The inner seating area was very cozy and definitely succeeded in uniting Mexican and Swedish design. The garden seems great too - but maybe bring a jacket :) The music of Huset could be curated a bit more carefully - it seemed like they wanted to have for everyone a piece included, yet some consistency and subtleness could have been nice as well.
Overall,...
