I genuinely hope the owner of La Unica reads this review and addresses the problems with the restaurant. I can’t believe there are so many positive reviews after having such a disaster experience. There appears to be potential with this place when looking from the outside, but that all gets flushed down the toilet the moment you walk through the door.
This place deserves less than 1 star. In fact, overall it’s low-key trash. Firstly, the food was terrible. We ordered two salads, and they arrived with dry chicken and the lettuce appeared wilted as if it had been sitting outside all day. The lettuce wasn’t washed properly so the bacteria gave my wife gas and diarrhea. I uploaded a photo so you can see what $50 buys you at this place. It’s an absolute disgrace.
If you are looking for good food/service, avoid this place. It will be a nightmare experience. This is the first time in my life I felt discriminated against by the Hostess, the Waiter, the Captain AND the Manager. My wife has darker skin and the staff was very quick to try to be aggressive with her so I had to mirror their aggression to get them to stop harassing us, paying customers. I was like OMG WTH is going on with the staff. Many of the staff was racist and arrogant.
When you approach the door, the Hostess has this disdainful look as she looks at us from down to up. Then she starts with an aggressive attitude stating we cannot bring our service animal into the place. We brought a service animal with papers and an ID. I politely explained to the very rude and ignorant staff that Mexican law allows us to bring the service animal into the establishment. Additionally, we just wanted to place a to go order, and we offered to place the order with her at the door to not cause a problem. She had a nasty attitude and told us to go to the bar and place the to go order. After about 20 minutes of unnecessary arguing with several of the staff, they finally allowed us to place an order. While we were ordering the arrogant Manager demanded to see our service animal ID, which I showed him. Then we had another brief argument until he walked away. After several hours of mistreatment and being ignored, we were able to receive the to go order. The salads were missing half the ingredients and we continued to ask the staff to complete the order so we could leave. It’s almost as if they train the staff at this place to be as incompetent and ignorant possible so people don’t...
Read moreExcellent experience - service, cuisine, ambiance - altogether 5 stars.
We were seated promptly without a reservation, before the peak time. The backroom is beautifully high and airy, but without the "dining hall" echo, really easy to speak and be heard.
Ordered a bottle of a Mexican Rose, Grilled Cauliflower, Grilled Artichokes, and Grilled Mayan Octopus. The theme for all items turned out to be very tasty, very flavorful, great fresh textures, but not overpowering. All items came across as very light. No heavy feeling after the courses at all.
Cauliflower is done right to where it is pleasant to bite, not soft, not hard, and prepared table-side for easy sharing. It may be a great starter for 3-4 persons, we were a little too adventurous to get it for the two of us.
I loved the artichokes, but finicky eating may not be for your date night. This kitchen's grilling is impeccable, done to protect the artichokes' character and add the awesome smokey flavor.
Both cauliflower and artichokes came with gentle jalapeno mayonnaise, it was fun to balance it with the vegetables on the plate.
The octopus was the star of the dinner. Flavored by a marinade it was grilled just enough, just to have it done but still tender and with that fresh seafood sensation. Again, as with the vegetables, the grill enhanced the flavor, highlighted the marinade, but preserved the wonderful natural texture.
Desserts are excellent but large. Matilda cake will only get perfect if it loses the bottom two layers. Basque cheesecake is also amazing but overpowers with its size.
The service was always available, maybe sometimes 2 seconds too soon to clean. Pleasant, friendly,...
Read moreWe were very happy to find this restaurant on Monday night when most places were closed in Roma neighborhood, where we were staying. This is an upbeat energetic restaurant! None of the people in our group spoke Spanish and we really appreciated the help - throughout our dinner - of an English speaking staff member whose name I neglected to ask. One of the online lists rated this place among the top ten bars in CDMX so I was disappointed when one of the margaritas arrived quite weak. When I mentioned this our waitperson immediately took it away and brought back a fresh one but it was not much of an improvement. My cocktail with Mezcal was also lacked the level of mezcal I expected and was a bit too sweet for my tastes. For appetizers, the roasted cauliflower was AMAZING. This is a must try. The Cesar Salad was made tableside with a lot of ceremony and did not fail to please. We tried two entrees, red snapper and fish cooked in salt. The latter was pricey at 850 pesos and it would have been helpful for the staff to point out that it's an enormous quantity of fish even for two people. That said, the fish arrived caked in salt and the dressing of it, table-side, was skillful and amazing. The fish was succulent and sweet to taste. We carried back most of it and it made for a good meal the following day. The desserts were okay. Service was EXCELLENT, we were made to feel very welcome and overall, we had a good experience. The prices were however a lot higher than our other dinners in the Roma neighborhood. This was the only restaurant we tried in Polanco and the cost may be appropriate for the...
