Cards on the table: I'm not a vegan nor a vegetarian, although I probably eat meat less often than most other meat-eating cooks. I also don't much believe in plant-based food that imitates meat products. It does not seem like honest food to me and it's almost always lacking in flavor, texture, and sheer unctuousness compared to the dead-animal version. Anyone who says plant-based chorizo is remotely similar to real chorizo is lying to themselves and to us. I also can't imagine making soups without chicken stock.
A local cook once told me that Mexicans are so loyal to their national dishes and flavor profiles (for good reason) and so averse to vegetables that look like vegetables (can't be as bad as the Argentines though), that they will only eat plant-based food that imitates them. Ergo, seitan pastor (I hate seitan), or soy chorizo. (I'm not fond of texturized soy in general).
So, this restaurant and its menu were not created with me in mind and all my prejudices were confirmed unfortunately.
I've eaten at the sit-down restaurant twice — a takeaway gringa and an order of "chorizo" flautas — and the taco stand once — tacos pastor.
The flautas were absolutely the thinnest ones I have ever seen, barely bigger than a drinking straw, so I'm not sure that it's fair to judge the fake chorizo since there was so little of it, but it did remind me, if only just, of [very dry] chorizo. The tortillas were a bit chalky and chewy. The tiny ramekin of accompanying green salsa was slightly sweet, just a bit picante, and kinda flat and weird. And for $65 pesos? Nah. Plus it took almost 15 minutes to get them.
The gordita (gringa?) and the tacos pastor were all right, I guess, although I'm having trouble remembering much about them. Their flavor profiles gestured vaguely in the direction of their meat-based counterparts'. That's the best thing I can say.
The jamaica water was my favorite thing about the meal. They don't serve beer, apparently something about beer requiring too much water? To remain consistent with that idea, they should remove avocados from their menu then, too.
The wait staff was extremely personable, friendly, and efficient.
I wish vegan Mexicans would let their preconcived ideas go and just eat well-chosen and seasoned vegetables, which can be glorious in guisados and delivered via Mexican vectors like tortillas. I've had good luck serving black bean and sweet potato tacos, sauteed zucchini tacos with onions and chayote, and roasted setas and cherry tomatoes and chiles. Add good spicy Mexican salsas or pico de gallo, and who...
Read moreI used to be a big fan when I would come here alone, but everything changed after last night. I came here with a group of friends - 2 Germans, 1 Canadian, 2 Mexicans and 2 Americans - and we were all speaking English, which is the common language we all speak in our group. When the workers heard us speaking English, they took a rude and super cold attitude towards us. It was so disappointing to me, especially, because, as the only vegan in the group, I had highly recommended this place. But the way the workers behaved was so mean and unwelcoming. I felt so embarrassed, but still tried to keep a positive attitude, but at one point, one of the cooks said, "we say 'Ameri-KKK-a.'" as he looked right at as. Not all Americans are racists, but the people working last night made us feel terrible and not welcomed simply because we were speaking English amongst ourselves, and there were only two Americans with us last night. We all ordered in Spanish, too! I will never go back, and if you are an English speaker, I would recommend that you don't come here, because the immature workers will treat...
Read moreCame to know about this place in a food vlog. Had to visit it since I live in México. I have to say delicious vegan tacos, the best vegan tacos in CDMX. We ordered the chimichurri taco, Al pastor taco, cecinita taco, and other 2 more tacos and guacamole with chips, fries and salsa on the side. All tacos we ordered were great in taste and so flavorful. The guac was delicious too.. the salsa was good, we got one with spice and other no spice. The fries were cold and we did not eat it. I wish it was served hot and crispy. Nevertheless the tacos were delicious. And we also had drinks Horchata and Jamaica👍 will definitely come back to try the other tacos in the menu. This is my favorite spot for vegan tacos! Thank you for opening a taco place for the vegans....! For postre we ordered chocolate ice cream and 1 brownie to go. The chocolate was delicious with nuts and chocolate sauce, Yum.. and the brownie we had the next day, it was amazing, very soft and fudgey, great in taste.. a must try if you enjoy postres.
