La Canopée — Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

It's hard to convey just how special this place is. Let's start with the food. As someone who absolutely loves good food, I can honestly say this is in the top 5 best restaurants I have eaten at in my life (and I've been fortunate to travel numerous parts of the world). Every single item on the menu is made with such care: The coffee, the juices, the smoothies, the meals, the sauces, etc. I have 3 weeks left here and I'm worried I won't have time to try absolutely everything, but I will give it my best shot because it is just that good. The quality of the food and the nourishing ingredients are so abundantly present. Not only is the flavor out of this world, but you just FEEL good afterwards. The service and team working behind these beautiful dishes are beautiful, caring, kind people. It has a family-run environment and you know the owner trusts the operation of this incredible spot with each and every one working there. I wish I knew more Spanish than I do so I could just hang out with them! Mind you, they speak English as well. But this is the kind of spot you want to fully immerse yourself in, in terms of culture. The food, the service...it's no wonder the atmosphere is also authentically divine. It's relaxed, it's vibrant, and I could honestly sit there drinking those fresh juices all day long with a book. Being Canadian, Mexico in August isn't a level of heat I'm used to...and it shows. They bring me out a fan every time I've gone and I've never once asked for it. It's not always easy to find that kind of thoughtfulness in the service industry. America and Canada could take some notes.

Do yourself a favor and leave ample time to dine at La Canopee multiple times. Seriously.

I was really looking forward to having breakfast here with a friend, especially after reading so many positive reviews here on Google and also in local Facebook groups. The listed opening time was 8:00 AM — we arrived shortly after, but the place was still closed and empty.

A staff member arrived by cab, briefly confirmed he worked there, and went inside without further comment. A few minutes later, he returned with a woman (possibly the owner), but neither offered a proper greeting, explanation, or apology. Both seemed visibly annoyed and preoccupied, continuing to move scooters, bikes, and other equipment out of the venue while barely acknowledging us.

The atmosphere felt cold and unwelcoming, so we decided to go elsewhere — which turned out to be a great choice, as the café around the corner was warm and inviting.

It’s disappointing to see a place with such a good reputation miss the opportunity to make a strong first impression. Especially just before the low season, when every guest can count — but this chance was definitely missed.
