Lets break this down. The enterier and service: the costo-co plastic chairs are fairly confortable, but could be better. We arrived early but had to ask for napkin, the glasses were stained. Crew were very kind but little bit rushy.
The food: serving chipotle mayo in the amuse is an insult, it was not just forgettable but defeating the whole concept of it. the tamal was ok, meet the expectation exactly i had expected from the place onion soup was over condensend, too sweet. The bread was burnt, and not niceley presented. Big minus, if you go down on this route you need to do better. (I think it is a hard and tricky food, now it was simplified and accordingly did not work) risotto was sad. Rice overdone little bit. the main course was a very safe bet, id expect much more than a nice pice of meet with some guacamole mezcal with mandarin sorbet was quite good (maybe little bit too much mezcal) but it followed with a jamaica sporbet with chocolate mousse. Interestingly enough both course would have been good enough by their own ( the choco mousse was exceptionally good ) but next to each other was too much.
Wine pairing was really nice, good selection, good matches.
I found that the construction of the menu was both lazy and safe. Competing in this category requires much more, mexican cousine is much more diverse. Where is a molle fusuion, a chile relleno, some enchillada concept, a gordita, etc... where is the salsa and the spices that dominates the mexican food?
Dont get me wrong, this is a very nice place and they serve decent food, but in the same category this is a weak performance, and hard to justify the existence if a random mexican grandma or a street food easily compete with...
Read moreBeautiful space, decent food, sloppy service.
Space = 5 stars. Really beautiful space inside hotel courtyard.
Food = 3 stars. Good, not great. Amuse-bouche was uninspired and on the greasy / heavy side (mini tostada with chipotle mayo and under seasoned beef). Companion ordered tomato and burrata salad which was tasty but contained pieces of avocado not mentioned on the menu. The tempura shrimp dish was ok but had way too much going on (a mayonnaise-y sauce, sauteed greens, capers, potatoes, tomatoes, lemon, and a lot of Parmesan). The fried shrimp was also under seasoned. When I asked for salt the server brought out a ramekin of large grained salt which really is better suited for cooking not finishing. Misdemeanors sure but adding up to something less than "gastronomy.".
Service = 1 star. a) Pretentious server. What I'm some sort of heathen because I want a beer with my lunch instead of a cocktail or glass of wine? Lose the attitude dude. b) The server brought my companion an amuse-bouche containing an allergen she just disclosed. What's the point? Clearly a lack of communication between staff. c) Double charged for two of our three beverages. Obviously could be an honest mistake but coupled with the attitude from the server it was not the note to end on. It made us question if it wasn't...
Read moreWe have a house very close to Matilda, so have really wanted Moxi to be one of our favorite, go-to dinner places. This week was our 4th visit, but I think our last. We have a contact within the hotel’s management and made our last dinner reservation directly through them. I expected a warm greeting, but arrived and stood around for an uncomfortably long period waiting for someone to even greet us. We were eventually invited to choose any table, which was fine, but then sat alone until a waiter finally arrived - asking us what we would like to order. I suggested that setting the table and giving us menu’s before asking for orders would have been a better start to the experience. The night was frankly going badly until the efficient Heidi arrived to supplement the badly understaffed serving team and took charge of our table. The venue is really pretty and the food is good, but this is an expensive restaurant, so needs to offer a much better product to represent fair value. We’d been to “The Restaurant” a couple of days before and went to El Golpe de Vista the night after, so the comparisons were very stark - The Restaurant and EGdeV are also quite expensive, but their food and service is first class by international standards. I’m afraid Moxi is not even in the top tier of SMA...
