In the late 1970s, Le Marquis, a wonderful French restaurant, was opened in Tangier by a Saoudi, located on a quiet side street near the Café Roxy. Its over-the-top decor by the notable American-born designer, artist and architect Stuart Church was remarkable.

For over twenty years Le Marquis was definitely the best French restaurant in Tangier until it abruptly closed.

In 2021, a new place named Le Marquis Chill-Out restaurant opened in the same location as the original Le Marquis, but it is also a bar and you do not have to order lunch. It opens at 12:00 Noon (seven days a week) and closes at 8:00 PM due to coronavirus curfew restrictions.

Unfortunately, its manager is rude and disrespectful to the point of insult. I could not believe how rudely I was treated for merely wanting to look at the place or the menu. I will not bother to walk inside this place ever again. You will not receive a friendly welcome and you will be horrified at the exorbitant prices.

Do not be deceived: this is NOT the original refined and superb French restaurant Le Marquis, despite the same location with much of the original décor.

The current obnoxious manager needs to be fired and replaced for daring to treat a prospective customer in such a rude manner. If you are looking for a bar and hangout, there are far better, and much cheaper, places in Tangier to go to than Le Marquis Chill-Out.

Le Marquis Chill-Out is predominately a bar with food, but do not expect it to be gourmet food.

The original Le Marquis, thirty years ago, was exceptional, and its faithful well-heeled customers were warmly greeted with a smile by Abdellah. It's food was well-prepared and carefully cooked, and the polite, uniformed waiters were always professional.

Le Marquis Chill-Out has another full bar and lounge downstairs in the basement for serious drinkers.

My advice is to just go elsewhere, but do bring lots of money if you still want to experience this disappointing and badly managed...

This is one of the best places in Tangier. The service is really good and the people are friendly. I like it better when it is empty. When crowded, it gets nosy. I recommend this place to everyone who is willing to chill out and have...
