Sarayah Food 🌶️🍛
We visited Sarayah Food in Tangier, bringing my parents along, expecting a more professional experience compared to what one might encounter in the souks or medina. Unfortunately, even here, we were met with assumptions about our background. The staff seemed overly focused on identifying where we were from and greeting us accordingly. While we understand the enthusiasm, it felt unnecessary and, frankly, a bit uncomfortable. It’s unusual—we’ve eaten across Morocco and never been asked about our ethnicity in this way. It came across as slightly discriminatory and odd.
Even when my parents greeted the staff in English with a clear “hello,” the insistence on continuing in another language (presumably Hindi) was inappropriate and unwelcome. A bit more professionalism in such situations would go a long way.
Regarding the restaurant itself, it’s a small space. While cozy, we couldn’t help but notice the missed opportunity to use the area next door to make it feel more open and inviting.
As for the food, we ordered everything spicy 🌶️, and while it did have some heat, it lacked the depth of true Indian spices and authentic flavors we expected. For example, the mixed naan was disappointing—it used some sort of flavorless spreadable cheese instead of regular grated cheese, which would have made a big difference.
The drinks were hit or miss. The first mango lassi was delicious 🥭, but when we reordered it, the ratio of ingredients was inconsistent, and it wasn’t as good. The passion fruit lassi, on the other hand, wasn’t enjoyable. Additionally, we had to remind the staff about the cola we ordered, though they quickly brought it after our reminder.
Overall, Sarayah Food has potential, but there’s definitely room for improvement—both in customer service and consistency in food quality.

Read moreA friend in Tangier recommended Sarayah Food, a new authentic Indian restaurant near her home in downtown Tangier. It is located roughly in the vicinity of the Cafe Roxy and on a quiet side street where Chico's Pub is also located.
I decided to try the food but as I was alone I decided to take-out. The young Moroccan woman who took my order told me she had once lived in Orange County, California, outside Los Angeles.
The Tika Marsala with Basmati rice was ready in less than 15 minutes and placed inside an aluminum foil-covered container and then handed to me in a brown paper bag with handle.
I took a petit taxi to my home and the food was still warm. My total bill was 64 dirhams and it was delicious, though the portion was not large. And I noted that the Basmati rice was 15 dirhams extra. I enjoyed it all.
This Indian restaurant is very good and I will definitely be returning with friends. I love Indian food and this restaurant at the time it opened was the only place to get it in Tangier. (There is now a second Indian restaurant in Tangier that is located downtown.)
The entire restaurant was modern looking, with LED ceiling lights, a dozen tables for two, and an immaculately clean toilet. Its definitely worth eating here if you're a lover of Indian food.
In 2023 Sarayah Food moved to a larger space just off Avenue Mohammed V, at 4 Rue Moussa Ben Noussair, across the street to the entrance of Tanjah...

We started with the Butter Chicken, and it was nothing short of perfection. The rich, creamy sauce was a beautiful balance of spices, and the chicken was tender and juicy—absolutely full of flavor. Every bite felt like a true taste of India.
The Mixed Grill was another highlight, with a fantastic variety of perfectly cooked meats—each piece was well-seasoned and grilled to perfection. The smoky aroma, combined with the subtle spices, made it an unforgettable dish.
To complement the meal, we enjoyed a cup of their fragrant Indian tea, which was the perfect finishing touch to this delightful experience. It was beautifully spiced and served at the right temperature, rounding off the meal on a warm, satisfying note.
What really sets Sarayah apart is its authenticity. The flavors, the cooking techniques, and even the presentation reflect a deep respect for traditional Indian cuisine. You won’t find a more genuine taste of India in Tangier.
