Café de Tuin — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Disappointing Experience at Café de Tuin I visited Café de Tuin in Amsterdam last night, December 23, 2024, around 10:00 PM with a friend. Unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant. As soon as we entered, we were met by a bartender, a tall man in his forties, who addressed us in a very unfriendly and rude manner. He complained about working alone, mentioned that he was too busy, and insisted that we leave the premises immediately.

As a regular visitor who enjoys a drink at Café de Tuin weekly and always leaves a tip, I see this bartender behind the bar regularly. His behavior was particularly disappointing given my frequent patronage. This kind of treatment is unacceptable in any hospitality setting. According to our little Lonely Planet guide book, this is one of the larger brown cafes in Amsterdam. The others must be quite small! We were able to find seats in the back corner, which was lucky since the place was quite full. The atmosphere was pleasant, and it was nice to have a skylight in the back area on a rainy day. I went to the bar to order, but the server kindly came back with me to the table to explain what beers were available. We ordered some bitterballen and spring rolls. If you've never had bitterballen, they are deep-fried crusty on the outside with gravy containing bits of meat on the inside. It's always worth trying something once, but we won't have them again. Nice chill place with a nice selection of tap beers.

I just thought the service was pretty bad - we almost always had to call for their attention to look at us even though the bar wasn't even that busy.

The first bartender, I think he was wearing sort of a hat, looked upset that we interrupted his chat with his colleague to serve us beers after waiting for some time.
