Canvas — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Used to love this place. Balcony and interior are nice, food has become really average e.g. first course was tiny shrimps and mayo, served with potato salad and mayo.

Came to celebrate my thirtieth birthday with 20 friends, booked months ahead. Told at the door we didn't have a booking, and each of my friends were being turned away (I had asked via email if we could come an hour earlier for drinks outside and was told that was fine). Stood at the bar for nearly ten minutes being ignored by two bartenders, then when I eventually asked if I could order a drink was told "um... i guess... we come to you..." The next time I went to order from a waiter outside he said "no - bar service only".

Seated for dinner at 7:30. At 9pm I had to ask where the starters were.

We ordered two jugs of beer. Forty minutes later we followed up on this and they brought one jug. Twenty minutes later we asked about the second jug and our waiter said (quote) "it will come in due time". Due time is over an hour, for beer? (Never came). Switched to wine bottles so we could make it easier for the bar.

We didn't receive desert until 10:50pm. Just after 11, a waiter started removing our plates and full wine glasses. I was so disappointed by then and said "I paid for that drink" and he rolled his eyes, held out his dishes bucket and let us pick our cocktails and wines back out of the bucket and said "well, you need to move off the table anyway".

The only staff member that really made an effort for the night was a young (Dutch?) girl, long brown ponytail. Made me feel like it was actually my birthday - I am grateful for her!

Amazing place, amazing food and everything for an affordable price. However de nightclub itself on new years eve had the worst Dj'ing ever. They just kept playing these beats the DJ and people In charge loved yet everybody just avoided to listen and dance to. It was very much like most people were there just to enjoy the amazing view of the fireworks. The beats were very the same and fades between songs very abrubt, plus. Comparing the sounds to what Amsterdam has to offer the whole experience was very below par. It made us leave the place at 1AM to only come back at 3 am and give it another try realizing everything was just the same. We really did our best to dance to it on this amazing location on the first of january 2023 but it was unbareable. So finally we went to sleep. The bar and staff are amazing and very helpfull, the overal vibe was very nice open and friendly everywhere from the lobby all the way up the the restaurant and bartenders. The next morning after the party the place was clean and beautiful with a nice serene view of Amsterdam feeling very exclusive. The bathhouse however looking like the cherry on the top floor of the whole deal really was a huge flop to us since it smelled heavily like sewage smelling so bad you could bet it was very under maintained. We did not dare to set more foot into that bathing house. Change the music renovate the bathing house and I would have given canvas and Volkshotel 5 stars. It has the potential to be so much better with these minor fixes. Hopefully this feedback is useful to you.

Travelled 45 minutes in a taxi (paying a large amount) to this club with a group of friends to celebrate an 18th birthday. Waited around 5 minutes in the lobby for everyone to arrive in which time one of my friends, who was simply tired after nearly 3 weeks of travelling, sat down on a chair provided. Then upon attempted entry into the club, we were extremely rudely and offensively denied entry, with an extremely mouthy 'bodyguard' accusing my friend of being 'too drunk to stand up', as well as offensively accusing the rest of us of being in the same condition and even worse and more insulting, on drugs (note that this was absolutely not the case). In trying to reason that they had no grounds to make these assumptions and we were being discriminated against for being a large-ish group of young people just wanting to celebrate a birthday, we were forced to leave the building. In standing outside waiting for yet another taxi to take us home, another bodyguard came out and made us leave the premises altogether, when yet again we were not doing anything wrong. My friend and I (both females) were physically and violently pushed away by this bodyguard, causing one of my friends to stumble. I am absolutely outraged with and offended by everyone involved, who ruined my friends birthday and caused the rest of us to be out of pocket in travelling there and wanting a good time. I have never experience such rudeness or bad service, and I would not recommend this club if it was the last...
