Situated on the corner of Prinsengracht and Oude Looiersstraat, La Tertulia is one of the city's original coffee shops. It takes its name from the Spanish word which translates as "The Salon".
Resembling a botanical greenhouse, the interior is shrouded with plants. Continuing the voyage of discovery, there are large crystals and meteorites, creating a mystical ambience in a calm, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The coffee shop has three levels. Upstairs is an internal balcony area offering a great view of the premises and the canal beyond. There is seating at the entrance level and, when the weather is warm, a small outside terrace on either side of the building. The 'dispensary' is on the lower ground floor, where you can order tea, coffee, freshly squeezed juice, ice cream milkshakes, snacks and sandwiches. They also do a wicked weed brownie.
Run by a mother and daughter combo, this place has a good reputation for their taste in music and for the consistent quality of produce on offer. The cannabis menu is limited to a handful (possibly plus a couple of fingers) of products, but these are of high quality and, be warned!, sometimes of high potency. There are pre-rolled joints for those who can't be bothered to roll their own.Higher indulgences can be satisfied with the waterpipe vaporiser.
Whereas nearly every coffee shop closes at 1AM, there are two notable exceptions in the city centre being: La Tertulia which closes at 7PM and Grey Area....
Read moreIâve been to Amsterdam many times, and as a tourist visiting a coffee shop you tend to expect a little bit of friction if youâre not familiar with the process even if youâre a regular smoker.
The staff in here were so welcoming and friendly as I came in. Itâs a very laid-back place with plenty of respectful and relaxed customers.
Quality of product is also great. As a smoker in the UK Iâm used to getting unnecessarily strong stuff, but here you can tell immediately thatâs itâs top quality in terms of flavour profile and effect. Would highly recommended the âGalactic gelato?â (Might be wrong but itâs the product at the top of the menu).
Not sure on the negative reviews because you can tell by the setup that this is a comfortable and authentic place and if the vibe isnât your fancy it might be because youâre not fitting with the vibe. Otherwise it might have just been a bad day!
Final say is if a coffeeshop has plenty of plants inside you know youâre...
Read moreA quiet little coffeeshop outside of the city center. I've been twice over the last 7 years (2007 and 2010) and it was always a positive experience. The floor level feels dense with plants and books, similar to a cozy den. The upper level (mind the steep metal stairway ;-) ) is open and airy, with games on the tables and views of the neighboring canal. The cannabis is mid-range in my opinion, but will not disappoint! Fresh juice and snacks (best toastie around!) are readily available, but don't expect over the top friendly service. These ladies seem to be all business, but make no mistake, they certainly care for their customers. I've felt more than welcome as a non-local, don't be afraid to stop in! If you're looking for a change from the packed and loud downtown coffeeshops, this place is for you. I'm counting the days until...
