The gelato at this location is delicious, however, the staff picks and chooses how they will serve their patrons. Normally, there’s a cashier that you pay for your desired scoops of gelato. We had a late dinner at Daniel's (another Gianni's Group establishment). We spent a ridiculous amount of money at Daniel's Steak House. We decided to go to Gelatissimo for dessert. I walked to the cashier area to pay for my scoops of gelato; but there was a sign that displayed Cashier Closed. Pay at the bar. It did NOT say pay at the bar first! I saw several other patrons waiting in line to get their scoops of gelato. There were about 7 individuals ahead of me. The server politely advised the patrons to pay at the bar.
Now it’s my turn. Yay!!! The server looked at me and then she advised that I go to the bar to pay for my gelato before she can serve me. I asked the server, “What was the difference between me and the 7 or so patrons that were before me?” The server politely repeated herself and asked that I go pay at the bar first before she can assist me.
The manager Tajmin got involved and wanted to explain their process to me. Even though I informed Tajmin that I understand their normal process, nevertheless, I didn’t understand why there’s preferential treatment. Now, you’re asking that I go stand in line all over again. I asked Tajmin for her business card 28 times. She politely refused to provide her name and her business card (she did not have a name tag on). Eventually, another manager from the neighbouring restaurant, Amore Mio Pizzeria, interjected and asked what’s the problem. I briefly explained my experience with Gelatis and he simply asked Tajmin to provide me with her business card. And she did.
Neither manager apologized nor exuded any type any type of empathy or concern. Both managers simply wanted to bark their processes and how many years they've been in business. A simple apology and a show of appreciation would have sufficed for me. I did not ask for anything free. I'm willing to pay like everyone else. Equally. When I looked around, I noticed there were no patrons of colour at this establishment. Maybe all of the locals and/or tourists are aware of the implied discrimination; maybe this is a one-off experience. It's my first time to Aruba, One Happy Island. With 96 different cultures, I was caught off-guard with discrimination. I rarely write reviews, and when I do, I always try to post positive reviews when I receive exceptional service.
This experience took me back to 1960s America where people of colour could not enter any establishment through the front doors.
If you are a traveller of colour or anyone who finds discrimination despicable, I would not...
