De Overkant — Restaurant in Haarlem

Beware if you’re a tourist or have little kids. Cute location and lunch menu, but service was not good. A while after ordering drinks we had to flag down our waitress to put our food order in. We noticed table after table getting food over the next 30 min, and our waitress never came back to check in. After we went inside twice and even asked if we could just get the fries for our toddler, the waitress came to our table to tell us she “forgot to put our order in or something”. I’m not sure if there was a language barrier or what she meant exactly, but she didn’t submit our order and was hardly apologetic. The food was just okay once it finally arrived. The fries were the best thing, and they were a partnership with another restaurant. Had Brunch here while on vacation with my husband and this place exceeded our expectations. The cafe is located down an alley with seating both inside and outside. Staff was also very helpful since we didn’t speak Dutch. They gave us an English menu and catered to the allergies I had. Overall they make the experience all the more memorable.

My husband and I both got sandwiches as well as freshly squeezed orange juice. His sandwich was pretty much a Ham and Cheese which he said was a bit salty. As for my sandwich, it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. It came with Turkey, cashews, lettuce, and honey mustard on a white bread. I would definitely get it again as will as the orange juice because the juice was perfectly sweet and the sandwich was delicious.

Overall would definitely recommend this place to anyone and my husband and I will make sure to come here when we come...

we ordered a sandwich, omelette and cheesecake, tasted great. orange juice was also freshly made. restaurant was cosy and homely. above all, their service was excellent. all the staff i came across were extremely patient, polite and helpful even though i dont speak dutch and can take longer for us to understand each other using english. very appreciative especially towards the ladies who made us feel at home in a foreign country :) i also dropped my beanie during lunch but they kindly kept and passed it back to me i went back in the evening....
