De Kade — Restaurant in Hoorn

The sort of place that makes me angry! Smashburger? Sounds great right. Even at €17.50 it sounds great because that's what one has to pay in rip-off Holland these days.

But €17.50 for a burger with no fries? Now THAT's a ripoff!

But wait! There's more.

The smashburger wasn't even smashed! Not even close to being smashed! I doubt they even had the right implement (cast iron skillet) for smashing a piece of beef in the kitchen. This was NOT a smashburger!

But wait! There's even more!

The burger wasn't even made of BEEF! It was clearly made of something else and tasted of something weird. Beef + other bits from the abattoir? Sadly this is not the first time we've had rubbish FAKE "beef"burgers in NL.

The fries at €4.50 were HOT. So there's that. They didn't taste of anything but at least hot.

My sandwich - a ham and cheese focaccia toastie - had pitiful amounts of ham, very little cheese but lashings of mayonnaise and the focaccia tasted dusty.

In fairness after complaining about the non-smashed, non-beef burger the staff were pleasant enough about switching it out for a very good buratta sandwich.

And the views from outside of Hoorn are absolutely lovely. But the restaurant is simply trading on lovely views to bring in the punters. If it was anywhere else it would be out of business and, frankly, in my opinion, it should be. Service-wise it was OK. Oh, and the beer was cold. They couldn't screw that up coz it came in its own bottle! Otherwise this was an absolutely...

The location and the view from the terrace is really nice!

But that was the only nice thing about our visit. The food we ordered took quite long to arrive and the waiting staff was quite rude at times (throwing a pillow over our heads to a bench on the other side of the table for example).

Then on to the food: the portion sizes were much too little for what we paid for them. We had the Duo 'De Kade' (20.50 p.p.) which was for 2 people, but it could definitely be finished by just 1 person. Also we were actually surprised by how tasteless it was, both tacos and burges! It's almost impossible to make tacos so plain in taste...

Tijdens mijn bezoek aan De Kade in Hoorn voelde ik meteen de ontspannen sfeer die zo goed past bij deze historische havenstad. Het terras is een heerlijke plek om neer te strijken: je zit direct aan de kade met uitzicht op fietsers en voorbijgangers, wat zorgt voor levendigheid zonder dat het onrustig wordt. Het oude pand met zijn karakteristieke gevel geeft extra charme aan de ervaring.

Wij kozen voor een uitgebreide lunch en die stelde absoluut niet teleur. Ik nam de avocado toast met scrambled eggs, mooi gepresenteerd op stevig meergranenbrood, rijkelijk belegd en afgewerkt met een vleugje pit van chilivlokken en frisse granaatappelpitjes. Een gerecht dat niet alleen goed vult, maar ook perfect in balans is qua smaken. Mijn tafelgenoot genoot van een knapperige baguette rijkelijk belegd met pulled pork, een lichte dressing en verse groentes. Beide gerechten werden geserveerd op kleurrijk servies dat de versheid nog eens extra benadrukte.

Wat mij echter het meest bijbleef was de gastvrijheid van het personeel. Niet alleen waren ze vriendelijk en vlot in de bediening, maar ze dachten ook mee. Onze hond kreeg meteen een bak water aangeboden, zonder dat we erom hoefden te vragen. Dat soort kleine details maken een groot verschil en zorgen dat je je écht welkom voelt.

Praktische tip: parkeren kan op loopafstand bij de haven, en van daaruit wandel je zo naar De Kade. Vooral rond lunchtijd is het een populaire plek, dus iets eerder aanschuiven geeft je meer kans op een goed plekje op het terras.

Kortom: De Kade in Hoorn is een aanrader voor iedereen die houdt van lekker eten, een gezellige ambiance en service met een glimlach. Ik kom hier zeker terug om nog meer van de menukaart...
