Het Slachthuis — Restaurant in Leiden

We went for dinner and were very disappointed. The local is nice and the staff friendly BUT the food is just not worth it. Almost nothing was homemade. They just serve you industrial vegan meat substitutes with supermarket-bought sauces. The "sashimi" is a commercial vegan "fish" straight out of the plastic bag presented to you with a bit of soy sauce and nothing else. It's outrageous. The only things that looked homemade were the desserts (we didn't try them so I cannot comment). I don't understand the good reviews. PD. To the owner: 1) I do not mind the use of vegan "fish" or other substitutes, I just wish there was some manipulation to improve them before serving them. 2) If I had had a bad experience because of an isolated issue I would have talked to you or the staff, that was not the case. I was disappointed by the restaurant's approach to vegan food and I wrote an honest opinion. I wish there have been a review like this before our visit because then I'll have known...

Sandwiches were DELICIOUS but Oreo cake and gf red velvet cupcakes were a disappontment 😥

I ordered the cake for my bday but was very disappointed with the quality. Cake was very dense (more like a brownie) and apparently overbaked (very hard on the edges). The frosting was greasy and tasteless 😕 The glutenfree red velved cupcakes were not much better, a bit sour, was not a red velvet in taste, just in color. Such a pity, they looked delicious 😐

Service was excellent from the very start (when I orderered the cake online), and I will surely go back for the sandwiches, they were fresh and tasted super yummy....

I wanted to give this place 5 stars, but at the moment it must be 4. The service was very friendly and attentive, but half the items on the menu seemed to be unavailble (July 2020). This could be due to the failing tourist season, but was disappointing nonetheless. The food I got was pretty good, and well presented. The locale is clean and spacious and I think you can also eat outside if the weather permits.
