Love going here during my stay. Amazing cocktails in a comfortable, and slightly hidden, environment.
Once I found the entrance, I was greeted by a smile and friendly hello. I recommend planning ahead to come here, as they are known to fill up fast.
Luckily, when they were busy, they provided instructions to get on the list for that night, when space became available; they let me know. While I waited to be welcomed in, a wonderful place to wait for the message sent through telegraph when space became available. (Ok, not actually telegraph, but I wouldn't put it past their cleverness) is Cafe Zondag, not far at all.
Once I got my notice, and was welcomed inside, I entered into a dim room with many interesting designs on the walls. The designs changed as I walked through, probably on a timer but worth waiting the extra minute.
Already, a fun start.
I was led downstairs into a warmly lit room, with comfortable seating nicely spread out. To the left is the bar, beautifully backlit with the delicious selection of spirits, and another warm welcome from the gentlemen behind the bar.
I sit down, and was offered the drink menu. After taking a look, I knew these guys know their drinks. I asked if he, Pieter, could go off book and come up with something; he came up with more than a few somethings based on the spirits and I was feeling.
As I sipped on my drink, I looked around and saw people in great conversations with each other. I rarely saw the blue light of a cell phone come out at all, and that is the type of atmosphere they encourage here.
Sure, the price is a little more than drinks you get at the pub (I'm not a hater; I love whiskey, ginger beer, and lime at an easy price) what I love about here, is the more than typical cocktail experience, from Mr. Smith.
I recommend this to my friends, and to those looking at maybe going.
Go. What else are you Going to do? Not going to go to the only Speakeasy...
Read moreIt's a pity that I won't visit this nice place due to the arrogant bartender-manager. The environment is nice, the cocktails are nice, the waiter is nice. But an accident happened and the behavior of the owner was awful. The drinks from the table next to us dropped, while both my friend and the people next to our table were moving. My friend said "I am sorry", the people smiled and the waiter brought them 2 new cocktails...which he billed to our table without even asking or at least informing us! We could have not money, the drinks might have been finished already, the people on the next table were moving as well... When we talked with the manager, he said that we are right because nobody really saw it, but we should still pay for the drinks, because otherwise he should pay. He didn't even agree to at least split the amount. Of we were informed, we would of course agree to share the cost! Oh well, on the bottom line, good cocktail bars are much more than good cocktails and Mr Smith is more of a Mr in the decoration of the bar than in reality. My friends and I left the bar deeply...
Read moreMr. Smith is a hidden cocktail bar in Maastricht with a great atmosphere. The entrance is easy to missâyou have to ring a doorbell to get in, which adds a fun and exclusive touch. Once inside, the space is cozy, stylish, and dimly lit, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed night out.
The cocktails are top-quality, with interesting flavors and a lot of attention to detail. The bartenders really know what theyâre doing and are happy to recommend something based on your taste. Prices are on the higher side, but you do get great service, and they also serve drinks with water cups and popcorn, which is a nice touch.
One thing to noteâthey are very strict about reservations. If you book a table, make sure to be on time, as they wonât hold it for long. It makes sense given how small the place is, but it does feel...
