we came early without a reservation and were seated without issue. it was a lovely meal and the owner is so friendly and funny
we had the antwerp beef stew and the waterzooi. as someone who doesn't really like sweet flavors, i have to say that the stew still skewed sweet for me, but it was very flavorful and rich. the waterzooi was delicious, definitely recommend this if you like seafood soup - the mussels were particularly tasty, very plump
sometimes fries are an afterthought companion to a meal but not here. these fries were the perfect thickness, not too salty, great potato flavor, with excellent mayonnaise. and the croquettes were great with the stew
the beer list is intimidating but the recommendations on the menu won't steer you wrong. we had a very nice white wheat beer with the waterzooi
other people in the restaurant ordered mussels, which i wish i had gotten instead of the stew (not knocking the stew though!). it smelled SO GOOD. we were absolutely stuffed to the gills and our mouths were still watering
there's also jenever to enjoy! he fills your glass and when i say he fills...
Read moreVisitors to Maastricht can be forgiven for thinking they are in Belgium rather than NL. Witloof restaurant is part of this history & Limburg region heritage.
We had a delightful evening in this classy & cosy restaurant, which serves Belgian specialities with panache and original twists.
Starters of old cheese croquettes were perfect and a raddicio/endive hazelnut & cheese salad was a surprise knock out. (Witloof means endive)
The moules frites with a creamy mustard & leek sauce was excellent, putting those we have had in Bruxelles & Bruges to shame! There were plenty of other meat dishes to choose from too, such as rabbit, meatballs & chicken stew.
Even the bread & butter was top class. The selection of beers is legendary with plenty of tips on food pairing; the wine list was small but good quality, we chose a very good Riesling.
The service was friendly and attentive. All in all, I highly recommend this restaurant if you like...
Read moreIncredible atmosphere, delectable food, wonderful service. Went to this family-run restaurant on the last night of over 2 weeks in Europe. Best meal I had by far. The blue cheese mussels were phenomenal, the krokets were perfect. Better yet was the beer pairing that came with each course, which added an extra level of intricacy to the experience. Also learned a lot about beer that I had never imagined before. As if that was enough, they make their own genevers too which paired perfectly with desert. To top off the whole night, some friends happened to pass by the restaurant and see me sitting inside near closing time. The owner happily obliged when they asked to join and gave us the beer tasting experience of a lifetime including rare beers not imaginable in North America. If I could give 6 stars I would and I will be back the next time I am in Europe even if it means planning a Maastricht leg of the journey just for them. Thank...
