This accidental stop made out whole #sxm trip. You know when you go to #stmartin when you ask anyone what the locals eat they send you to one of the many #BBQ joints around the island. The BBQ there is really good and has pork ribs, to whole fish to massive whole lobster. Nothing wrong with that but is that what the people eat? It turns out obviously it is not.
What the locals eat is typically relative to their immigration. Saint Maarten for the most part is an island of islands. Many people from Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, Dominican Republic and others all have migrated here for work.
This is where you find the inspiration IMHO. The variations of West Indian and Carribean cuisines made mixed on Saint Martin.
Biggies Central helmed by @biggyblaize is the perfect example of this. A must go to on the island found in #phillipsburg hosts the Chef Biggie originally from #dominicanrepublic who is a massive talent.
Get on her WhatsApp and you will get the daily menu and be able to send specific requests. Everything is made with whatever is available in the market that day and from scratch so be prepared to wait or message ahead so it is ready when you arrive.
Pictured is Curry Chicken (wow), brown stew snapper (wow) and a steam snapper is a stunning clear broth (wow). Each served in #calabash bowls with amazing sides like a killer potato salad.
I had the honour of being in her kitchen as she answered with a demonstration to my questions about her technique. For this I am grateful and was a top highlight.
You can also find her daughter Nicky behind the bar making fresh juice cocktails like the favorite #coconutmojito and #mangomojito

Read moreDuring our recent trip to Sint Maarten, my husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Biggy’s Central in Philipsburg, and it was an absolute highlight of our visit. Tucked away off the main tourist area of Front Street, this gem of a restaurant delivers an authentic Caribbean experience that lives up to all the rave reviews.
From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The atmosphere was inviting, and the service made us feel right at home.
We ordered the curry chicken and jerk chicken, and both dishes were phenomenal. I opted for the curry chicken, and it was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. Each dish was accompanied by generous portions of rice and peas, potato salad, green salad, and the absolute best macaroni pie I’ve ever tasted—seriously, it was a masterpiece on its own! To wash it all down, we had refreshing glasses of sorrel, which added the perfect touch to an already exceptional meal.
This wasn’t just a meal; it was an experience. Every bite reflected the care and love put into the food. It’s clear Biggy’s Central takes pride in serving up the best of Caribbean cuisine.
One thing to note: cash only, so come prepared!
This was, without a doubt, the best meal we’ve had in Sint Maarten. If you’re looking for an authentic, flavorful, and welcoming dining experience, Biggy’s Central is an absolute must-visit. We can’t...
Read moreTOURISTS BEWARE! This is probably the first time in my life that I go to a place based on the Google ratings and get a big disappointment. Don't get me wrong - food was very good. But from the get-go you feel swindled out of your money just because you look like and/or are a tourist. We went to get some takeout. There was no printed menu with the prices (big red flag), we were read the options half-assedly by the gentleman at the counter, without any specifics on the price (of course). Whenever we discussed getting a certain dish, we were "recommended" something more expensive (another red flag). We decided to get one snapper meal, which was at a price that felt quite steep ($30). Once we mentioned we were only ordering just one, the gentleman tried to continue the shakedown warning us that we would need to buy two meals instead of one for two people. I declined politely and his manners went from bad to worse there. About half an hour later, the lady at the kitchen advised the meal was ready. He prepared the bag with the snapper and two johnny cakes in complete silence. We were on the island for about 2 weeks and we never EVER had an experience like this one. The vibe felt completely unfriendly as the gentleman realized that we weren't spending over $60 at his place. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place, it feels like Tourist...
