1898 Food & Drinks — Restaurant in Rotterdam

Highly recommend! Excellent wine and one of the best meals I've had recently. We first sat out on the beautiful terrace over looking the old harbor to enjoy an early cocktail. Lovely music played in the background but subtle enough you could still enjoy a conversation.

Thank you to the Staff for being so friendly, accommodating and attentive,  we never lacked for anything.

The decor wss was warm and cozy, with candles and lowlights. Soft velvet couches just added to the visual and comfort.

The food was very tasty, we especially enjoyed the prawns with the black noodles, green onions and sesame. The mussels we're also excellent. I was curious as to how cheese would compliment the dish as it's not usually added to seafood,  but it was fantastic and should be done more often. The truffle beef carpaccio (my partner had) with capers & toasted pinenuts was scrumptious and luscious.

We were lucky to find this gem on our first visit and know it will be the new hot spot!

Reservations are highly recommended as the restaurant was fully booked Friday...

Great food and a nice concept. Service was lacking though - we didn’t get menus right away and afterwards we had multiple situations were empty glasses were completely ignored. Would’ve been an easy task to make us happy with another drink and to make profit. Even though the tuna was grilled great (rare - as I asked) it got a quite rubbery outer layer; I guess it was too long under the heat lamp.

When the bread basket was empty and the dips were still full, the basket was taken away and the dips were left there… no question if we wanted more bread, and the dips stayed. Weird understanding of...

Op een regenachtige middag hier gaan lunchen. Het was niet te druk toen ik aan kwam. Voorafgaand van het bezoek het menu bestudeerd en alles klonk erg lekker. Uiteindelijk gekozen voor de carpaccio 1889, Nordic gravad lax, Adobo tequila gamba's en de coquille lollies.

De carpaccio is echt een van de beste carpaccio's die ik ooit heb gegeten. Geen waterig diepvries pakje carpaccio op een bord maar echt dun gesneden kwaliteits vlees. De Nordic gravad lax was goed op smaak en stevig. Vaak als de zalm zelf wordt ingelegd is de zalm aan de rand te zout en daarbinnen zacht en smaakloos. De coquilles en garnalen waren beide iets te lang doorgegaard. De kreeftenschuim bij de coquilles was lekker maar de zeekraal en prei te gaar doorgebakken en de wortel nog iets te hard, sommige stukken wel beetgaar en andere stukken te hard omdat de wortel in verschillende groottes waren gesneden. De orzo (?) Bij de garnalen mocht iets meer op smaak gebracht het was een beetje flauw, of de garnalen hadden zelf sterker gamarineerd moeten worden.

De jongen in de bediening was aardig en behulpzaam, en dacht mee voor een alcoholvrije cocktail. De sfeer is knus en donker met de tafeltjes dicht op elkaar. Als het vol is zou het misschien wel een beetje rumoerig...
