The way the proprietor/manager dealt with us customers was quite reminiscent of the awkward way Basil Fawlty of that old but hilariously funny sitcom,'Fawlty Towers' dealt with his guests at his Torquay hotel. For starters, customers were not being waited on at their tables, which I suppose was understandable as he seemed to have no staff around, and neither clientèle for that matter... However, when I went inside to order our drinks, he was standing behind the bar, rummaging through a drawer or something like it, completely ignoring me. He then started snubbing me when I started ordering my drinks by making rather offensive remarks. Couldn't I see that he was very busy and that I'd have to wait until he was done? This could easily have been a scene from 'Candid Camera', as it was all quite ludicrous, him loudly rummaging behind the bar in a totally empty café with me trying to order some drinks for my friends out on the (also) empty terrace... It's possible we got to visit Café de la Gare at an exceptionally bad moment, but after some amazed laughs and giggles about this bizarre encounter, we unanimously decided to leave the scene and find another more appropriate place to have drinks on our Friday...
