Just when you think the food cannot get any better, it somehow does. The diversity of dishes offered was on point, demonstrating mastery of both Asian and French cuisine. Flavors were impeccably balanced, and textures were the gift that kept on giving in every dish. The presentation was also (in my non-expert opinion) Michelin-worthy, down to the plates.
I will be dreaming of the Thai coconut soup and the beef tataki for the foreseeable future. The mushroom risotto and broccoli teriyaki will also convince the pickiest of eaters that these vegetables are worth eating. Of the nine dishes we tried, we agreed that the salmon carpaccio was the most overshadowed by the others. The wine list could be improved but by Dutch standards it was still good, with a all the basics covered.
The shared dining system worked wonderfully, with each portion copious enough to share properly (with 9 dishes for 3 people we were very very full) and impeccable timing between courses. With nine dishes for three people, we could have rolled ourselves home on our full bellies. The Monday night special was also such a good deal that we had to check it several times and still didn’t believe it until the bill arrived. Best value meal I've had in the Netherlands – and maybe even ever?
The staff were lovely and handled the rush with grace and ease while still being attentive and personal. I want to extend a sincere thank you to the staff for the loveliest birthday dinner I could...
Read moreFantastic for coeliacs and gluten free diners, otherwise just fantastic.
Oker is one of a scarce few restaurants in The Hague to clearly offer an extensive range of gluten free and dairy free dishes. This alone was enough to convince me to dine there. Happily I report that Oker also offers fantastic food served by friendly, knowledgeable staff in a pleasant, comfortable environment.
One of the Oker virtues is that it clearly marks dishes that contain gluten and dairy within their Dutch and English menu. It is a shame this is not also true for their online menu. It would be great to see them make that improvement.
Before deciding to eat at Oker I quizzed the servers on duty about the risk of cross-contamination. I was encouraged to find that all the people I spoke to were keen to understand and help. Servers were familiar with the meaning of ‘coeliac’. They did not guess or speculate answers to my questions and instead checked with the chef if in doubt.
I love having tough choices to make when eating out. Oker certainly offers that for the gluten free diner. You could eat there daily for a week and have new things each day. I sample the Thai Coconut Soup, Truffle Risotto and Eggplant, Goat Cheese, Walnut Salad. The textures and flavours were truly worth savoring, and despite being short for time on a business trip dinner, I thoroughly...
Read moreSmall plates! Wonderful, everything was just superb. First, best gin and tonic so far, had a nice raspberry gin, which they served in a red wine glass garnished with fresh raspberries. I also saw a fresh lemongrass garnish used in a different drink. For dinner, they have a menu of all small plates, organized from light to heavy (very helpful). The plates are split between French-Dutch-Asian cuisine. Server recommended ordering 2-3 plates per person, which was just right. Lots of people at our table got the sashimi and loved it. I got the Chinese pulled pork pancakes, very hearty and tasty portion. Also, I ordered the duck liver bonbon, this was not at all what I expected from the menu description, it was a sweet-salty dish, very eccentric but good. Cappuccino great, comes with a unique rich butter cake square. Service top notch, very patient with our...
