I would not recommend going here with a big group, not even if your company is paying. If you do go here, choose the chef's menu WITH starters, otherwise your employees/guests will definitely remain hungry (and even with the starters they might still be hungry).
This is very common for restaurants, but the only option for large groups is the "chef's menu", where the chef chooses what you get. Unfortunately, this is not worth the price you pay and our employees ended up still hungry, and some went to get more food somewhere else after the meal. We chose the chef's menu without starters (this was a mistake), with mostly vegetarian choices, to cater to our group's dietary needs.
What follows is a calculation, as an example, to explain why I say the chef's menu is not worth the price. As you would expect, the dishes we were given were mostly cheap ones (most restaurants do this, it makes sense for them financially, of course). For instance, dhal, saag paneer, bombay potatoes... The most expensive dish we were given was probably the lamb curry. Per person, we ended up eating, on average, one curry (including very small portion rice, small portion salad, value: approx. 15€), one quarter of a garlic naan (value: approx. 1€ per quarter of naan), and one pappadam with chutney (value: approx. 1.50€). The portion sizes are quite small. The total average value per person was therefore 17.50€ (if we had ordered this food as a regular group, rather than via the "chef's menu" - prices I have named were taken directly from their website). Because this was sold to us as the "chef's menu", we each paid 24.50€ per person for the food (plus extra for drinks). This is a mark-up of 7€ extra per person, or 40% more than the typical price on the menu, simply because we were in a large group.
Starters would have been an extra 8€ per person, and I have no idea what we would have been served. Unfortunately, I fear it wouldn't have helped to fill us up much more. Many people at the table mentioned still being significantly hungry after finishing the food, which is the most important point of criticism (regardless of price).
I have yet to go to a restaurant in Utrecht that is good for a large group (~20 people), as they mostly have the same problem as Surya. It is even more difficult when catering to a group of many vegetarians and some vegans. Even more so if the group is diverse in terms of identities, so you want to go somewhere that is inclusive to all types of people. Surya seemed like a good choice, but leaving with hunger is not good.
To their credit, their food is tasty and everyone enjoyed. They made everything mild so that everyone could eat the food, regardless of how much spice they can handle. The waiting staff is...
Read moreOverall we had a bad experience at the restaurant. Details are as follows. The mocktail that was ordered (Virgin Mojito) was not more than 3 sips and in a glass completed filled with ice. The bitter lemon that was ordered after that lasted longer. We ordered 2 plates of momos, which were completely dry. Momos when prepared fresh or kept to reheat in a steamer are always moist. These momos were definitely not reheated in a steamer but in the microwave, which resulted in them being completely dry. On the flip side the sauce that was served with the momos was excellent. For the main course we ordered a Balti chicken and a bhuna chicken, The Balti chicken has pieces of onion and green bell peppers which were not completely cooked hence when you took a bite of them the flavour was only of onion and bell pepper. In any Indian curry the onion has to brown and not be translucent. the balti spices were not cooked through the curry as all we could taste was the tartiness of the tomato, and no flavour of the spices. The Bhuna chicken curry was a little better, at least the spices were cooked through thoroughly. In both dishes though the chicken that was addedd did not have any flavour of the spices nor had any seasoning. If you are using boneless chicken, at least season the chicken.
in the end we come to the rice, in which Indian kitchen is Basmati rice cooked Al dente.
Overall a very disappointing experience, the taste and the food experience seems more catered to the...
Read moreThis was our third visit to this restaurant, and our experience has always been good so far! But this time it was totally disappointing, We brought our parents from India to celebrate our special occasion. And we ordered Chicken tikka masala and Madras Chicken, the only difference this time was that in our previous orders we were always attended by the Indian staff.
To our surprise, the dishes were so much spicy to the extent that it was inedible by any human, and trust me, we are spicy food lovers and our palates can very much tolerate the spicy food.
But both the dishes were such as if the chef had put a box full of spices in them, and we got ulcers in our mouth. And when I enquired the waiter and requested him to take the dish back and try to reduce the spice level, the waiter was rude and told us that this is what they do and they don’t know what our level of spicy is and they can’t do anything about it and instead asked us to order curd.
I have ordered these dishes on repeat every time and I know how they have tasted in the past. This is no way to treat the customer.
I was a repeat visitor but I would never visit this restaurant again, as they spoiled our whole evening!
I would suggest Indians to ask for an Indian waiter when they visit this restaurant as clearly the other staff is not ready to understand what kind of food you...
