Hope River Pies — Restaurant in Banks Peninsula Community

Have been a fan of hope river pies for a while enjoying trying the various pies on the menu , however tried today the steak & kidney pie and the kidney was incredibly bland and actually tasted funny. Nothing like the taste I remember of steak & kidney pie Mum & dad made. So disappointing as I’d been looking forward to this coming up on the pie of the week schedule. For the price point I’d never get it again or recommend it. Hoping this was a one off. I wouldn’t usually write a review but felt like doing so after todays experience. Most of the other pies I’ve tried are pretty good although for the price I think Sheffield pies in Canterbury are better value for money. The vege options here do seem better overall than the various meat pies I’ve tried, the fish pie was pretty bland also unfortunately I thought . I first got to sample their pies last year at the Lyttleton market and they tasted great. Recently my wife and I found ourselves craving a good old fashion pie in this dreary weather, So we went to their store in Lyttleton this time and ordered a few fresh pies and some frozen ones for good measure. Every single one is bliss. My personal fav was the steak with green peppercorn, you could taste the quality beef and actual peppercorn. its clear they are using quality meat in their pies as opposed to the dross you find in other places. Came across the famous horror rover pies at the lyttelton markets. The steak cheese and caramelized onion were out, so I chose the other that piqued my interest.

Corned beef, grain mustard, and mash 7.0/10 Unique combo. Maybe experimental, but idk. Cheese sauce would be better instead of mustard.

bolognaese pie 8.3/10 I forgot to take a photo inside the pie 😅 but this was really good. It is very flavourful and actually is like a bolognaese mince beef mix. I'd happily buy this again.
