La Mexicana North Shore — Restaurant in Devonport-Takapuna

We went there hoping for fresh tortillas and big, mexican flavors. We found only the fresh tortillas, which were delicious, but...the fillings were totally bland, not even enough salt. We had 3 x pork carnitas, 3 x beef steak and 3 x beans tacos - all boring and bland. For this and 1 x tortilla chips with guacamole and 2 juices we paid about $80, so overpriced, 1 taco is about $7, which is max. 3 bites. And we ordered 10 tortillas for take away, he said they made them fresh in the store, but we ended having frozen ones, didn't understood why. All in all, a super average experience, not worth coming back. They definitely need to hire a mexican chef who knows flavors!

PS. Thank you for the reply, appreciated. The problem was not the salt but missing the punch of flavors, the kick who makes it next level & amazing. Definitely the mexican chef was off that day. The tortillas we had were labelled 06.02., when I asked for fresh, I meant made same day, 07.02., warm if possible, as you have the tool...

My ex was mexican, and she said this place made authentic tacos. Since then, I've been back so many times. It was interesting seeing their corn grinder machine they use to make the tacos, never seen a place make tacos in-house.

Pork carnitas tacos 9.5/10 There is so much flavor. I added avocado, which was a good addition. Love the salsa verde and amount of coriander per taco. It's one of the many flavors there that are so good. For me, it's quite filling too.

birria broth 10/10 I pretty much drink this like a soup. Such a hearty and a side I always get with these tacos. A must if you come here.

In the 5 years I have lived in Auckland only one thing has eluded me that I desperately missed from my hometown of NYC… really solid authentic Mexican food. Lucky by chance I happened upon this place for lunch yesterday. Was absolutely blown away how good their tacos were! You could easily put them next to some of the best Mexican bodegas in brooklyn and they would be as good if not better!
