Tatapouri Fishing Club Gisborne Harbour — Restaurant in Gisborne

I had heard this place was a nice place to go for a meal and a drink so was quite excited to be taken there for my birthday. First off, the staff were very rude. I was a little surprised considering two of them were older women. Their answers were very curt and seemed to have no interest in anything other than their conversation. As we walked in, one of our group went to take his hat off when one of the ladies growled sharply 'We don't wear hats here'. This was a bit off putting as he was clearly taking it off anyway. We figured maybe it was just these two staff in particular but this definitely made us feel unwelcome as our group were not regulars. We figured we had better ask about seating, menus etc. as it didn't seem to be ran like a typical restaurant. One of the women just pointed down the end of the building and said 'just sit there' Once seated and waiting for our meals to be cooked, all we could hear were the people cooking the food being very loud and laughing quite audibly. The food was nothing to write home about; I ordered a burger and didn't like it at all, all it tasted like was greasy mince. Also tried to get the attention of a couple staff members for some help and was ignored in favour of schoolyard gossip - which we could hear. Won't ever come...

If I am looking for a good hearty feed at great prices, local club bars and restaurants are always my go to. And this one....woah! Amazing! I was catching up with a cousin who I hadn't seen for some time, and she mentioned that she was a member here so off we go! We all started with Coffee, and this was perfect, the coffee was delicious and came to our table very quicky. We then ordered our food, and as you can imagine, the food had a very oceanic flair! And it looked amazing. There is a delicious array of seafood options, and I had to try a few of them so I ordered the Seafood Chowder and a piece of Fresh Fish which was Terakihi. The other diners ordered the Beef Cheeks, the grilled fish and chips and a HamBurger. My chowder was perfect (with the obligatory slice of garlic bread on the side!) It was loaded with fresh seafood, and was a good consistency and a deep, rich flavour. The beef cheeks were cooked perfectly, melting under the fork, and accompanied with a delicious mash and some fresh vegetables. The fish was so fresh, you could tell that it was caught that day, had a great flavour and texture. Thank you to the entire team for an amazing afternoon meal! Go on down and join up! Had a great time. Was with a group of teachers on a Thursday 6-11pm. Staff were awesome. Buffet was delicious- fish, salads, ham, roasts, seafood & hot veges. Dessert assortments. Drinks were affordable. Beautiful view. Inside & outside seating. Had a guitar singer while we ate. Had a Dj until 11. Had a MC for our formalities of the night. Room was decorated with balloons, candles & natural nz trinkets scattered on table. Although i believe our tchrs organised Dj, singer, candles, balloons & MC the ambience & venue were divine. One bummer the toilets are cramped with poor circulation of air for the amount of people...
