Service was just lacking... Sadly, the rating doesn’t match the food taste. Had high hopes since the photos looked so good. But it was just ok. Wish I read the low ratings first.
Found a piece of hair on one of the dishes. Bathroom needs serious cleaning. Food came all sweetish even the lamb. We’ve actually travelled to Georgetown, Penang and many cities in Thailand so we have tasted both countries’ many authentic dishes from their Hawker street food to night markets. I would say that their clientele love the food since it’s the better one in the immediate area (not much going on there) but not worth the drive.
Lastly, I was a bit put off when I asked for our family of 4 to be seated by the window and got rejected because the server claimed that they needed to be able to put tables together for larger groups. Understandable, even though the place was half empty. However, another family of 3 arrived & no reservations and were gladly given the same window table no questions asked. Sad but true. If they have rules then follow through, so to not alienate customers.
Would’ve given this place a better rating if only their food made up for the server’s blunder. However, all came out sweet and heavily lacked taste. One dish (fried fish collar) did come out with taste but too much salt. The Laksa is a big pass. Laksa sauce was extremely thick.
If you are in the area then do it. No other options there hence their high rating.
Their better dishes are their roti and their sweet satay chicken (peanut sauce...
Read moreWe Google searched, was between madam woo vs this place. We actually drove to madam woo. When we walked up the stairs to the restaurant, and looked at the menu which had wine, we turned away. As Malaysians, We wanted the Malaysian version of Malaysian food, not fancy Malaysian food. Came to Penang street food instead. Free parking at the front. It’s at the corner of a street. Nice setting on the inside. The manager - Owen was really personable. He is from Melaka. The food- char Kuey teow has “wok hei” and was perfectly done. Rendang was delicious ! Fried porn cracker was great ! The teh tarik was so thick and spot on like Malaysia taste. Kids also enjoyed the soya jelly bean drink which was very Malaysian.
Other dishes we tried - honey marmite chicken. This was just ok, thought the chicken was a little overfried. But it isn’t quite the normal Malaysian food, we should have gone for other standard Malaysian food like the fish collar rice noodle soup or laksa. We didn’t as we just ate those 2 days prior at another Malaysian restaurant.
We also ordered the golden sand squid - the salted egg portion was great, but we were a little full by then.
And then we just chatted with Owen for a very long time. He is great, he definitely know the food business and how Malaysian food should taste - as he used to also work at restaurants.
I’m a Malaysian foodie and I Would highly recommend this place if u are in town. You...
Read moreWe ordered on UE so will have to retry, in person next time however,
Rating is lower due to our food seeming old or stale. The pork meat within our Char Kuai Teaow had a sour taste to it and certain pieces were VERY rubbery and hard, with the noodles having an old noodle (rancid?) smell. The wontons although not bad tasting, had to be the smallest and most underwhelming wontons I've ever had, and I'm a wonton warrior, I eat them often from many places. Lastly the Honey Marmite chicken was actually very delicious although was married by the dried out salad that accompanied it.
I am aware everywhere has a bad day and I will say based on the reviews, we may be the exception, not the rule. So I will be sure to go in store in person, to try their food properly.
For all other purposes, the Kuai Teaow was actually pretty good, if it wasn't for the bad tasting meat and odd noodle smell. The wontons were still tasty, just very sadly sized for their price. The Honey Marmite chicken was delightful, just perhaps skip the side salads, unless they're fresh, stale or dry slaw is not particularly pleasant.
We look forward to coming in person, and hopefully increasing this...
