Maybe i had too high expectations but was very dissapointed. Went around dinner time on New Years and portions were very small ($8.10 ('special' for one sad fillet that was mostly dough, flavourless and came with a drab slice of lemon)) menu online was nowhere near what was in store (wanted a family pack but wasn't aware it was only during lockdown, that needs update.) the hand-cut chips were so thick, (but tasty) prices are so expensive only the lunch special is reasonably priced. DON'T RECOMMEND THE FISH BURGER. the panko meant that it got soggy quickly because of the sauce (which also tasted like nothing- was watery, messily put together and the bun was soggy because of the watery flavourless sauce. couldnt taste anything! the fish pieces should've been one but i got 2 weird soggy bumpy tubes that stuck out. at the end all the sauce dripped out onto the paper. it was tiny and barely any veges, i had NO CUCUMBER and THE PERSON THREW THE CORE OF A WILTED BROWN ICEBURG, like why can't i have normal leaves, isnt the core for the compost/bin? i had like 2 slices of capsicum, a few spring onions and like 3 leaves of wilted coriander. i couldnt taste any mayo or coconut or peanut sauces. maybe it was just the person who put my burger together but i could've gotten sick and it was very lazy and a poor effort i am disgusted and hurt, how could one of your cooks be so disrespectful/rude? but the girl at the counter was very nice. i regret not getting a kids meal i should've. i regret...
Read moreQuality fish and chips if you don't opt for the cheaper fish option - I'd recommend the Gurnard or Snapper, and to skip on the novelty of Agria-cut chips. I also rate the coleslaw, which is delicious and refreshing, and the aioli makes the chips 10x better!
We got the lunch special (market fish + chips + aioli + coleslaw), one piece of Gurnard, and their Agria-cut chips.
The lunch special is great value for what you pay - however, it was let down by the quality of the Warehou, which was the market fish that day. It was pretty stringy and had the consistency of overcooked chicken, and was honestly really disappointing. It'd be good if they at least allowed you to swap the fish out for one of your choice and to pay the difference, or just provide better quality fish as the standard.
The Agria-cut chips were also a bit of a let down - I can see the novelty in getting seriously thick-cut chips, but this is perhaps too thick - it felt like I was eating a deep-fried potato, with only a little crunch on the outside before hitting the doughy inside.
Other than that, based on what we tried, I do recommend the Gurnard, the crinkle cut chips, the aioli, and the coleslaw - they're all done really well, and if happily come back for...
Read moreA few years ago, I considered this place a highlight of the wellington food scene. Sure you paid a little more, but the quality was outstanding.
Today, when the rest of Wellington was busy and every outdoor table on courtenay place was full, there was only one other couple in. Now I see why.
We paid $42 for:
A chicken burger smaller than a mcmuffin, which was advertised as having avocado. It did, but a smear like they were buttering toast, maybe 2 teaspoons total. Wilty veg. $16
A piece of grilled salmon that could be hidden behind a small jar of marmite, thin as my pinky finger. Unseasoned, served with a lonely sliver of lemon. $16.50. To be fair, it was delicious... but it was also an appropriate serving for a toddler.
A box of unseasoned, undercooked crinkle chips with a half handful of processed plastic cheese product and a couple spoonfuls of bland gravy, which was hopefully straight out of a packet. $9.50
I honestly can't recommend that anyone try this...
