Summary: VERY good, AUTHENTIC NYC-style pizza, coming from someone who grew up in the NYC suburbs and worked in NYC for years. Highly recommended.

As someone who grew up in the suburbs of NYC and worked in the city for years, I take my pizza very seriously. Normally I shake my head at places in other countries (even in other US states) that label themselves as NYC-style pizza because I've tried an abundance of them and very rarely are they any good. I did the same when I first saw Sal's, but my sis told me they were supposed to be legitimately authentic and she wanted to try it. I reluctantly agreed and walked in with serious doubts. I was a bit surprised when the slices on the shelves looked like real NYC pizza. I was even more pleasantly surprised when we got our food and started eating. I can verify that Sal's pizza is delicious and authentic NYC-style pizza!!! My sister and I walked out of Sal's completely satisfied, and in a complete change from when we walked in, I even exclaimed how happy I was we had it!

We got the combo of a slice of pizza, 3 garlic knots, and a can of soda for $11 NZD, which is certainly a good price. My one complaint is that although the sauce for the garlic knots is very good, it is served cold (which is certainly not the norm in NYC). Other than that, everything was excellent! Keep it...

Sal's premise and food look inviting and there's always customers inside and indeed there is a steady stream of eat-in or takeout diners at peak periods.

The pizzas have a delicate structure and flavour and orders are made for single slices, halves or whole pizzas. The latter is large and would suit two or more diners. You won't find chunky bases or tops slathered in mozarella. If you need a stronger flavour salt, herb mix and chilli flakes are freely available as table condiments, which is a plus on Sal's part.

Their popular, spicy buffalo wings come with a great sauce (tasting atad like Louisiana hot sauce) and is accompanied by crunchy celery sticks with its own refreshing dip which gives the wings a wonderful balance. There are also other side dishes on offer if you need more food or variety. Overall their pricing reflects the gourmet niche they're operating in.

It is in a handy location in Cuba Mall Central where busy foot-traffic prevails and its brilliant window ambience does wonders to reel in new and...

Despite 2 different and unconnected friends giving me poor reviews about this place we decided to give it a go and do our best to keep an open mind. Sadly we found it definitely not 1) an authentic New York pizza or 2) a particularly good pizza. Sal's is a bit late to the party in Wellington and that's fine because the city is well served by the likes of Pizza Pomodoro and Tommy Millions. Millions is really the most authentic American pizza experience I've found in NZ so far.

We ordered a Manhattan pizza and were appalled. The base must had been baked separately with the filling of cheese, pepperoni and mushroom hastily added. This was the dampest, the soggiest, the crappiest pizza I have ever eaten anywhere. Not the nicest dining environment either with dirty pizza stands and lots of trash on the floors. Not...

always love their pizza as it reminds me of the Big Apple. They have many choices and toppings, but I usually go for the classic margherita or the vegetarian options. The dough is crusty and yummy, with their special sauce and dippings, which I love so much especially the one with blue cheese. They also have other choices like twisted dough, mozzarella sticks and buffalo wings. Waiting time varies, but most of the time is fast enough. Dining in is also comfortable with diner style tables and chairs. Staff are friendly and helpful, especially with the choices. The restaurant is disability friendly but not too spacious. Parking around the area can be super tricky, so I usually walk or dropped off here

Went in to Sals with a hungry team of dancers after a big competition. Was a bit tricky getting ourselves seated after calling ahead to make sure they could accommodate our big group, but managed to snag some tables. The wings were a big hit with the adults and the mozzarella sticks were the fave of the kids. The pizzas are huge. The chicken pizza was delicious, I didn't taste the pepperoni but most said it was a bit oily. The consensus was the wings will be worth braving the busy street it is on in Christchurch to get them again when we go home. Thanks for letting our squealy kids wind down and enjoy some time together.

As a New Yorker I don’t have a lot of great pizza options in Wellington, but Sal’s —also an ex-pat New Yorker— brings a pretty solid pie to the city. Best eaten when fresh. Order entire pies to eat-in or to-go for the best quality. The downside to Sal’s in general, not just this specific location, is what authentic NYC pizzeria doesn’t offer chili flakes, or parmesan, or oregano, or even basic S&P out to use on one’s pizza? You have to ask for it and they give it to you individually.
