We booked this place as we were attending a conference at the new Takina Convention Centre.
Couple of issues - First of all this place was hard to find, signage is non existing unless you have eyes on the back of your head too. We came via Dixon Street, the sign is on the wall but you don’t see it in the dark (8:30-9pm arrival). We walked in the alley for a good 5 minutes, and ended up near Leeds St, then turned around and then we could see the sign.
Then I carried my suitcase up several level of stairs in heels. As we didn’t know there was a lift. The lift area is not obvious and its hidden behind and around the corner. Again, no signage. Signage at entrance indicating where the lift is would have been helpful.
You have just landed in the city, you are tired and its cold and you just want to get to you hotel room, but yeah these minor events attributed to a negative experience before we even got inside.
Maybe I don’t have appreciation for dark, quirky, narrow feel hotel rooms. We couldn’t pass each other without bumping into each other, that is how narrow the room was! Really dark inside too, both in the bedroom and the bathroom, made it really hard to get ready or apply make up properly.
Really disliked this place to a point where I had an argument with my husband for booking it.
Will not visit again.
However on the plus side, the place is close to all amenities, including 3 different strip bars within close proximity if this is your thing. The place is clean, the bed was comfortable. There was a little welcome gift of sweets and...
Read moreLet me begin by saying that I really love it here.
The rooms are really nicely setup. The colour palette chosen is lovely, and it's accentuated by awesome art by Josh Currie.
Rooms are clean and were well stocked with everything I needed.
It felt like the quality of all the amenities in the room was intentionally thought about, which seems extremely rare for a hotel. The choice to stock something like Noble & Sunday tea isn't a fluke, it shows they care about their customers having a good experience.
The extra goodies in the room were also a huge bonus (chocolate, jet planes, pretzels, and even drinks).
The super surprising thing I didn't expect though - the best shower I've ever had in my life. Water pressure was great and the fixtures are perfect. The mirror in the bathroom is amazing too, as someone that struggles with harsh lighting, the extra light options were awesome.
The location is great, there are some fantastic food options close by like Pizza Pomodoro.
Thanks to all the staff who put in effort to make this a great (somewhat...
Read moreI had the good fortune to meet Maddie, one of the owners; she graciously accepted our recommendations for future room improvements as the Cobbler Hotel just recently opened.
Room 1 is small but cosy, perfect for a couple. The bed is comfortable and bathroom is modern and very usable. A gift of snacks was waiting for us upon arrival. In the evening, in this room, you can hear the adjacent restaurant, but by bedtime the noise had abated and sleeping was not a problem.
The staff is friendly. The hotel prints their OWN glossy magazine with restaurant and attractions (with calendar) information along with a bio of the owner -- very cool.
Entry to hotel and room is bia a 4-digit PIN, eliminating issues with room keys. No on-site reception, but communications with staff available by phone, email and smart TV.
Easy access to famous Cuba Street restaurant and shops. A short walk to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and waterfront.
HIGHLY...
