I used to love this place back in my uni days — it was one of my go-to spots. But after returning after two years, I was extremely disappointed. The food quality has dropped — bland, watery stir-fried noodle and satay with a strange smell, lot of noodle, with less meat or lot of onion N carrot. It looked unappetising. When we entered the restaurant, there was a strange, unpleasant smell — not sure if it was from the old carpet, the building itself, or something worse like a dead rat. Hygiene was a serious concern. While waiting for our meal, I saw the cook preparing my Pad Thai wipe her hands on a dirty cloth, then poke her finger into the food — it was absolutely disgusting. She even cleaned the platein with the same filthy cloth. Completely unacceptable. The toilets were disgusting — dirty, with urine stains and wet floors that were a slipping hazard. Despite the restaurant being quiet, the staff were too busy on their phones or chatting with each other instead of keeping the place tidy or attending to customers. Overall, it’s gone downhill — unhygienic, overpriced, poorly managed, and no longer worth visiting. I usually don’t write reviews like this, but I hope it draws the owner's attention to the serious hygiene issues, lack of cleanliness, and...
Read moreHeard that this restaurant has good Cambodian food which is hidden in the quieter area of Dunedin city centre. There are varieties of soup noodles, fry noodles, and rice dishes in their menu. Three of us tried three different types of food, and we had chicken rice, seafood soup noodles, and the pork char siew soup noodles. The seafood soup noodles were really flavourful with generous helpings of seafood.....a must try here! The pork char siew soup noodles was a bit off because of the reddish colour, but it was good too. The chicken rice was delicious and served with broccoli and shreddered chicken.....recommended to try. Because we liked this place so much, we came back for the other food. I had the hot and spicy fried noodles, which was also nicely done. The chicken wantons with seafood soup were just as tasty. This place I heard was once awarded the first place for cleanness. Can't help noticing how clean and tidy the kitchen is on my way to the toilet. This place is wheelchair accessible and to the toilet too with a...
Read moreThis used to be a favourite but we were shocked tonight at the watery, flavourless excuse for satay we were served up. No discernible heat, garlic, chill or ginger - not even a peanut taste. My veges were watery, defrosted budget freezer bag, this had clearly been beaten up from mass supply (Uber driven massive standards drop?). The owner asked after he served mine what my dining partner was having despite us ordering together earlier. After he replied ‘Combination Satay’ it arrived moments later, as the guy stretched over the tail by the door like he really couldn’t be bothered showing basic server respect. He had done this with mine, too. Honestly? The worst meal I’ve paid for in years, if not decades and we both agreed on this. Not sure what ingredients they’ve replaced the old recipe with but this diluted slip wouldn’t be acceptable in a prison …! (Not that I’ve been in a prison) Friendly Noodle House should be in Satay Prison,...
