Hikari Sushi Bar - George Street — Restaurant in South Island

I have eaten at Hikari several times, but this time I found the service utterly disgraceful. You get one bowl of miso soup free for every 6 pieces of sushi. My husband and I had 3 pieces each because we misread the notice. When my husband proceeded to fill out the second bowl of miso soup from their bottomless pot (they weren't lacking in soup!), the man behind the counter said he wasn't allowed. This same man (a perennial presence at that restaurant) has a naturally unpleasant and unwelcoming demeanour which I have taken note of each time I've been there.

On this special occasion, we found his behaviour utterly distasteful, as we are only talking about one extra bowl of soup, here which may as well have been saltwater heated up anyway! Where are the days where customer service and generosity were valued? May I also add the quality of food has deteriorated and the portions have got smaller.

We will never be going there again. Indeed there are other similar places which...

Good service and good ingredients in the sushi.

The sushi rolls were though rather badly done. They were way too big (3-4 bites in size versus normally 1-2 bites) and not rolled tight enough so either falling apart when picking them up from the plate or when we took the first bite. I am unsure if the sushi chef was new making sushi but it was not that delicious. At that price we expected more.

We ended up laughing about how much rice we left on the plate. As mentioned the other ingredients were really good so we ate them. It could though have been a really nice experience with a more trained chef.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Hikari. I entered with low expectations but the food was fresh, delicious and well presented. I had the don buri and The Mrs had a bento box. She wanted some sushi afterwards and, although sushi which has been in a cabinet for a while tends to be pretty insipid, what we were served was of greatly superior quality from what you'd get in the mall (and better value).
