Taste of Tandoor -Indian Restaurant Dunedin — Restaurant in South Island

This place should be so much better! It’s the best curry I’ve had in Dunedin (and the hottest-Indian hot really is what you ask for!), but the service is really poor and there is no music so it’s a pretty awkward dining experience. The first time I went we waited 25 minutes to even be seen by a staff member. I understand being busy but a simple “I will be with you in a moment” would help to know we haven’t been forgotten. Or if we had been asked what we would like to drink when seated we would have something in front of us while we wait. But we were just dumped there with the staff too busy to give us a chance to ask anything. The restaurant was half full and there were two wait staff plus a manager, it seems the problem is a combo of inexperienced staff and poor management/understaffing. The food took another 25 minutes and we watched as a table right next to us who had ordered after us received their meals before us because they complained about the wait. When we did get our food the rice arrived a few minutes after our curries. The saving grace was that the food was absolutely delicious and amazingly spicy. We decided to go back again the other night at 5pm (figured it wouldn’t be too busy) because those curries are so damn good and to take advantage of the 2 for 1 deal. It was a freezing cold Dunners night but the restaurant was somehow colder inside than outside! They had 3 unused gas heaters sitting in the empty larger room, and one gas heater turned on and pointing at a couple in the room being used. We thought about asking for another heater to be brought in but the manager who seated us doesn’t give you a moment to ask anything, is quite unapproachable and just runs off...mainly it would just have taken a long time to get that room heated to a comfortable temperature! We left without ordering anything sadly as we were too cold.

Perhaps if they invested more money into better management and training and/or hiring more staff, maybe some ambience, instead of the 2 for 1 deal people would flock there because their curries speak for themselves, no special deals needed! But I won’t be going back until then...

I recently visited Taste of Tandoor Indian Restaurant with my partner, and while the service was attentive and the staff were polite and accommodating, the food quality left a lot to be desired. The mango lassi tasted off like it had been sitting for a few days. The curries, including the butter chicken, were unnaturally colored, which raised immediate concerns about the use of food dyes and the freshness of the ingredients. Having worked in restaurants around the world, I can usually tell when a curry is fresh, and these simply weren’t. The texture and taste didn’t align with authentic preparation. The samosas were also a letdown. They had that unmistakable texture of having been stored in a fridge for a few days, then reheated in a microwave before being refried not fresh by any means.To make matters worse, I ended up with an upset stomach afterward, which is deeply concerning. Overall, while the service was a positive aspect, the food did not meet expectations in terms of freshness, authenticity, or quality. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously and re-evaluates its food...

This has got to be the best Indian restaurant in Dunedin. Here is my review of it on different parameters: Food - Food is super tasty. If you are a fan of North Indian food, then you are really gonna enjoy the fooding experience offered here. Do try butter chicken, tandoori chicken and mutton. These taste awesome. Cleanliness - Restaurant is kept very clean. The quality of food and the way it is prepared and presented is very good. They have a neat kitchen. Services - The food was served to me well before the time so no complaints from my side. One thing I would like to add is the friendliness of the staff. They were really dedicated and supportive. Restaurant also provides superfast delivery. Ambience - Location is great. The ambience inside is amazing. You get a feeling of eating inside a hotel restaurant. Price - Menu is available online so one can checkout online before ordering/dining in. I personally didn't find it any costly.

One should definitely try it and I'm sure you won't regret...
