The Kitchen Table Cafe & Bake — Restaurant in South Island

We were hungry and looking for a place to eat. It was raining and we saw The Kitchen Table. We had a hard time parking, but found a place and walked in the rain to this restaurant. Nice warm atmosphere. We had been vacationing in New Zealand for over two weeks, so we have had a lot of carrot cake. We both ordered carrot cake. Welcoming and patient staff. It was our first time and the lady waited until we made up our minds. Halloumi cheese sandwich. It was fresh and the sauce on top wasn´t spicy whatsoever. Good option to share. Granola bowl. Surprised me a lot because because it was a huge portion (of granola). However, it came with just a tiny cup of yougurt, some milk, banana and strawberry jam. In my opinion, the should add an extra portion of yogurt. 1 restroom available. Great atmosphere. Good place to read. Outdor tables...

Coffee and tea excellent. Possibly the worst, driest, almost stale cheese scone we have ever had. Add to that - what can only be described as surly - service and that's where 2 stars come from. A shame because it looked great, had a good feel, but in summary the worst service and food we have experienced in NZ. Perhaps because we weren't locals, as we did see the server being sweetness and light to 'regulars', who were warmly greeted. Sorry that our tourist dollar obviously wasn't worth the effort!
