The Catch Wanaka — Restaurant in South Island

I had an extremely disappointing experience at The Catch. I dined there on 16/01 and unfortunately ended up with food poisoning shortly after. I ordered fish, oysters, and chips and within hours, I experienced severe stomach issues and vomiting. This was the only food I consumed this day, as I became too ill after to eat anything else.

I can’t say for certain which of the seafood items I ordered here caused it, but I was the only one in my group who ate this meal and the only one who got sick. Food safety should be a top priority for any restaurant, and based on my experience, I’m concerned about their handling and preparation standards.

I hope management takes this seriously and ensures better quality control for future customers. Until then, I won’t be returning — sadly after this experience I don’t think I’ll touch...

Chips were a reasonable size for a medium. Crab stick was dry, fish was quite nice, and there the good stuff ends. The corn fritter was bland and undercooked. The oysters were so disgusting we took them back. They were pacific, not bluff, as advertised. They were undercooked, had a fishy taste and smelt like something from out of the local effluent pond. We did eat a few and decided that as we had paid good money, we would take the rest back. We were given a full refund. None of it was crispy, but not soggy. It just wasn't nice. There was someone still waiting for their order that was there before hubby ordered, and another customers order had been lost. There were plenty of staff on, all working as fast...

For the price I paid the food was underwhelming. The Chicken burger was very plain and put together very average. Two small pieces of chicken with lettuce and tomatoes a splash of mayo sauce for $15? The fish was over cooked and dry, the loaded fries were swimming in too much curry sauce you needed a spoon to eat it. No napkins or cutlery.The chips were all soggy from the sauce. Wonderful people but I like to get what I pay for in quality. $42 later, definitely not worth it. Was expecting a top Wānaka fish n chips experience, but instead I got ripped off B grade version.
