Any stay in Whitianga should involve a minimum of one drink or some food, or both, at Smitty's on Albert Street. It was a Friday and we were just overnighting, so before dinner, we went for a quick drink at Smitty's, which turned into a couple, as we simply had to stay and play 'Spin the Wheel'. Sadly we didn't win, but even as obvious Brits, were made to feel so welcome. The beer selection was great and I also couldn't help noticing Espresso Martin on draft....what an idea that is ! As I said, we were eating at our place (the Beachside comes highly recommended by the way - see separate review), we didn't stay for food, but there is a big kitchen and a look at the menu and a quick peek at what was coming out for others gave me the warm and fuzzies; would have no issues recommending it on that basis.

Ordered kids burgers and chips which were given a thumbs up, I got the Korean sweet n spicy wings which were very over cooked but flavour was nice. Also got the Smitty burger and chips which was nice but I think the combination doesn't work for me. Got the st Luis ribs which again were quite over cooked but flavour was really good. I think all chips could have been cooked a little longer but that's just as I like a good crunch. Cheers

The food is epic, the price is good and the staff are amazing. The only reason it is not a 5 star is due the fact they have enclosed smoking area with big open doors into the main inside area. This caused the whole place to be filled with smoke. It was the same levels an 80s restaurant where smoking was allowed inside. This ruined the experience totally.

Went there during the busy Christmas season yesterday. No bookings available so just came around 8pm. I tried to order food and got rejected as they didn't take any orders for some reason. Without any notice or waiting number or anything we got told to wait more than one hour. After 1,5h of waiting we watched a couple of people ordering food. So we tried again and then they told us, there was only sides left. I ordered fries & chicken wings and they were completely oversalted.

If you want to call yourselves a restaurant you gotta be prepared for busy times and find a system to deal with it. Very gutted. Time and...

Extremely unwelcoming us we walking through the entrance men were whistling at the women in our group. We were turned away, judged and laughed at for trying to support a local business. Thoroughly disappointed, would not recommend.

In response to your reply: We had no issue with being turned down due to the law as one of us did not have an ID. The issue was how rude the staff were and how we were treated when only just stepping through the door. The staff were unprofessional and made us all feel uncomfortable, I still stand by my point and the 1 star rating remains. Would not recommend for anyone to visit this...
