The reviews here are strangely polarised, but we had a great experience.

Is it touristy? Probably. Is it pricey? Yes, it is seafood after all. But I would be lying if I said the food or service was not good.

We were shown to a nice table near the windows so we had a good view of the harbour/Bryggen for our meal. 3 different wait staff came by to check with us and help us with ordering. The bread was quickly served up with butter and was quite possibly the best bread I've had in Bergen.

For starters we sampled the 4 types of caviar which was delicious. Sashimi was fresh and the Chu-toro was of good quality. We found the 2 local oysters (flat & giga) very distinct with the flat oyster being more concentrated and rich and flavours while the giga was more mellow and sweeter.

The shellfish symphony is pretty much the highlight of the restaurant with a huge variety of prawns, mussels, crabs and langoustines. The spicy creamy mussels were impeccable, packed full of delicious flavours. The quantity was probably enough for 2.

The whale steak was unique and done to medium rare. The beer battered cod fish and chips was fluffy and fresh, well supported by the batter which was crispy and subtle in taste so as to not overpower the flavours of the cod.

Creme brulee had a beautiful crust of caramelised sugar and was not too sweet, just perfect after a seafood feast. The waffle biscuit and cream served with berries was also great for topping off a fantastic meal with it's fruity flavours and light creamy texture (just beware the winter berries has alot of small seeds that some could find irritating!).

The plates were also beautiful, wish I...

To Fjellskål & Fish (Mathallen, Fisketorget),

I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding the experience I had during my visit on friday 20.12.2024, kl 16:45. I ordered fish of the day, Seabass, but when the dish was served, I discovered a foreign substance that looked like hair. This was both unpleasant and unexpected, and I therefore requested a new dish. The staff insisted that it was not hair, but I did not feel safe eating it. They told me they were out of Sea bass but I could get Sea bream instead and that was okay for me.

When I received the sea bream, I was optimistic and excited after 7 hours train from Oslo, but my disappointment grew even larger when I discovered that the fish was raw. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant that claims to deliver quality food. After complaining to the staff and expressing that I did not want new meal, I offered to pay for my partner's dinner instead and refused pay for my meal which I didnt even eat cuz it was raw. However, I was met with resistance from a young lady with glasses, who insisted that I had to pay for my meal as well anyway, despite the fact that I had documented the fish with pictures.

It is disappointing that the establishment could not show understanding for the situation. After a long discussion, I finally received help from another colleague who showed more empathy and arranged for me to only pay for my partner's dinner. However, this should never have been necessary, and it leaves a negative impression of the restaurant's service...

Good food but on the expensive side compared to what you get. Comparable to "Red Lobster" but at 10 times the price. Not an exaggeration. It's literally 10x or more.

Directed at tourists. English speaking staff. Dish looked rushed but tasted ok.

The managers behaviour makes me uneasy. As if looking down her nose at you. Response to other guests is harsh and can be easily misunderstood and overheard. Feels like you might get told off if you do something wrong in her restaurant. Or even asked to leave. Not accustomed to this brash behaviour when going out to eat. Does not seem susceptible to feedback. Difficult to tell if it's due to stress or arrogance. But the perceived experience is not good. Other customers were heard commenting on her behaviour and looked surprised.

Based on other reviews I'm sure there will be a well thought out reply avoiding all accountability.

You can get the same type of food at multiple other places in the same area. Suggest you look elsewhere unless your "hardened".

Rest of the staff appears polite and service oriented but does not oppose the iron grip of the manager.

Almost forgot to mention the toilets. Stinky, dirty, drug den feel. Not welcoming at all. Makes you feel dirty. Our company would rather wait until we got back to out hotel. I hope the staff dosent use this. Has to...

We were in Bergen for one day and thought we would treat ourselves to an exquisite lunch. I did some research and saw that Fjellskål Seafood Restaurant had great reviews, it was on the harbour and had a decent view so I thought what could go wrong. We sat down, ordered some starters which was king crab legs, salmon sashimi and smoked salmon. The crab legs were phenomenal, the sashimi was superb and the smoked salmon was decent. We had a simple order for mains which was 3x the Norwegian salmon(I mean we are in Norway after all) and the waitress said that they cook them all medium unless asked otherwise. After our experience with the starters, we were waiting in anticipation for our main course. Once our mains arrived, we were in utter shock. It was quite possibly the worst salmon all 3 of us had ever had. It was cooked well done and the potatoes(both variations) were both undercooked and inedible. One of us sent the food back and the waitress then came back and said the chef said the salmon was medium(I’ve attached photos as proof). By this point we just wanted to get the bill and leave since the waitress honestly didn’t seem to care much. We’ve travelled to 50+ countries and the odd few times we did have a bad meal at a premium restaurant they would have gladly taken the item off the bill.

I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the Fjellskal Seafood Restaurant in Bergen, Norway. This restaurant, located right on the marina in Bergen, offers a stylish setting with large glass windows and a covered heated terrace that lets you enjoy the view of the harbor up close. The welcome was very professional, and the whole place feels a step above many of the more casual spots nearby. We tried whale steak – quite an interesting experience, with a flavor somewhat reminiscent of horse meat – as well as fish soup and crayfish. Everything was well prepared, quickly served, and reasonably priced considering the quality and the location. The overall atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, making it a great choice if you are looking for something more refined than the lively fish market restaurants nearby. I would especially recommend it to those who appreciate comfort, attentive service, and regional specialties in a beautiful setting.
