One of the must eat foods in Norway is fish soup and fishcakes. Upon local recommendations, I came to Sostrene Hagelin which is known as the place to eat fish cakes, fish balls and fish pudding - Norwegian style.
For lunch I had the fishcakes in brown sauce (79 NOK) as well as the fishsoup (47 NOK for a small). The fish cakes were light and had a bouncy texture. The brown sauce (gravy) was flavorful but not too heavy. It paired well with the tyttebær (lyngon berry preserve) and scallions on the fish cakes. The side of veggies included diced potatoes, carrots & celery-root. They were soft but not mushy and tasted fresh.
The fish soup was thick and hearty and in addition to carrots and celery, it even had small pieces of fish cake in it.
I think I ate a little too much as I saw many locals just come in and get the large fish soup for lunch. Definitely a filling meal and so incredibly worth the price, especially when travelling on a budget - forget the fish market and come here for a more...
Read moreSøstrene Hagelin is a must-try for fresh, quick seafood in Bergen. I tried "The Best of Hagelin" #1 set menu and the #18 fish cake with vegetables, and everything was delicious. The famous fish soup was the highlight—it was wonderfully flavorful, reminding me of a chowder but with tender pieces of fish. The fish cakes were good, too, though they were a little on the salty side for my taste. The mash potatoes with fish and bacon from the set menu were also very tasty.
The restaurant has a unique, fast-food-like setup. You order at the counter, pick up your food when it's ready, and are expected to clean up your table afterward.
One important thing to note is that the restaurant closes at 7 PM, and everyone needs to be finished with their meal by then, so plan your visit...
Read moreWe both ordered the #4 'Best Of' fishcake platter, and everything on it really hit the spot! We were very satisfied with our meals, and the fishcake texture was very smooth. Perfect density and not too heavy, with beautifully balanced flavor. No unpleasant sponginess. Fish soup, mashed potatoes with bacon, roasted potatoes with roasted bell pepper, salmon wrap, and sauce were all lovely. Unpretentious food served beautifully. I'm a heavy eater, but I finished everything on my plate and left completely sated without being uncomfortably full. Would definitely recommend to anyone...
