KÖD Bergen Sentrum – A Steakhouse With Potential, But a Disappointing Execution

As someone who had eagerly anticipated the opening of KÖD in Bergen, especially after hearing praise for its restaurant in Oslo, I decided to celebrate my birthday there with my wife. We booked a week in advance and arrived with high expectations for a premium steakhouse experience.

First Impressions Getting to the restaurant was convenient, thanks to nearby parking garages with easy access to the city center. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the host and promptly seated at a lovely corner table by the window, despite the restaurant being fully booked. The ambiance was stylish and upscale, with a cozy, modern interior. Everything was spotless, as expected from a new establishment. No sticky tables or worn furniture here.

Atmosphere & Layout While the warm lighting created a pleasant mood, the restaurant’s tightly packed layout left little sense of privacy. With tables so close together, it was hard not to overhear other conversations – or even observe what our neighbors were eating before our dishes arrived. The noise level was quite high, which made intimate conversation challenging.

Food & Drink The menu offered a diverse selection of starters, which impressed us. We shared an oyster platter that showcased variety and creativity – including fresh oysters with pickled beets and horseradish, a grilled lemon variant, and a fried oyster with green chive mayo. It was a refreshing and flavorful start.

For the main course, we both ordered the ribeye steak cooked medium rare – a treat to celebrate the occasion, especially after maintaining low-fat diets leading up to the evening. Unfortunately, this is where the experience began to unravel.

Our steaks arrived well-done, grey throughout, chewy, and lacking the tenderness and juiciness you expect from a quality ribeye. It was genuinely disappointing, especially from a steakhouse that prides itself on “perfectly prepared steaks.” The server acknowledged the issue but offered no compensation or correction, which only deepened the letdown.

As for the sides: The steak fries were average and could’ve used more crispiness, The Caesar salad was fresh but unremarkable. The standout side was the Norwegian tomatoes, served with pesto and creamy cheese, which brought a burst of flavor to the table. The port glaze signature sauce was well-balanced and a good pairing for the steak (had it been properly cooked).

Service Our waitress was friendly, helpful in explaining the menu (though the steak descriptions were a bit simplistic), and attentive when present. She checked in at the right times and kept our drinks and water topped up. However, the staff seemed overstretched given the packed restaurant, making it difficult to get assistance when she wasn’t nearby.

Dessert & Final Impressions We ended the meal with a fried apple pie, which was delicious and a small comfort after the steak misstep. As a birthday gesture, I received a scratch card from the restaurant and was lucky enough to win a complimentary meal at another KÖD location, a nice touch.

While the ambiance, service, and starters showed promise, the heart of the experience the steak was a clear letdown. A steakhouse must deliver on its core promise, and unfortunately, KÖD Bergen missed the mark.

The restaurant promotes its concept as simple: “Perfectly prepared steaks with delicious side orders, together with a selection of beautifully matched wines. All wrapped up in an inviting atmosphere, that will make you want to come back.” Sadly, it did not make us want to come back to this establishment.

The inability to cook the steaks as ordered, combined with the lack of appropriate follow-up or compensation, left us feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. For that reason, we cannot recommend KÖD Bergen to others looking for a premium steakhouse experience, and we’re unlikely to...

Var her med konemor på bryllupsdagen vår. Booket bord i forveien.

Peppersausen manglet egentlig smak. Kunne klart meg helt fint uten den. Portvinsausen synes jeg var altfor søt. Ikke i nærheten av balansert.

Var ikke veldig imponert over siderettene heller. Togarashi fries: Crispy, men føltes overstekt. Kunne godt vært litt mer myk på innsiden. Godt krydret, litt spicy. Kunne vært bedre, men helt akseptabelt.

Ruccolasalat & parmesan: Helt greit.

Solid porsjonert for oss to.

We were staying at the Hotel Oleana next door, looking for a nice steakhouse for a birthday dinner and Köd didn't disappoint! The atmosphere was brilliant; a mix of contemporary and fine dining.

We had the chateaubriand between the two of us and it was lovely. Very tender and was delicious with just a bit of flakey salt provided at each table. The sides were also portioned well and tasty. The Wagyu old fashioned was also very nice.

Our server, Raminta was extremely diligent, kind and helpful with our meal, explaining the menu and offering recommendations. She did a fantastic job.

Our only issues were with the lack of a 25% discount on Fridays for guests staying in the hotel Oleana (I remember reading that the discount was available for weekdays, and rather should say Mon-Thurs), and that our tables were ever so slightly packed together and my arm was bumping into staff or another guest on a table behind me.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed my...

I took my fiancé for her birthday and I don’t know where to start to describe how good this place was. Every single member of the staff was super friendly and very well prepared. Aryan, the Restaurant Manager, was thinking of what we needed before we even knew we needed it😄 The cocktails are different from what you see in other restaurants and they were very good. We had the Köd Explorer and all the three different meats included were just perfect. We closed the evening with two amazing desserts, the fried apple pie and creme brulè, that like the rest of the evening, were delightful. 12/10 we will definitely be back❤️
