My group of 6 wanted a really nice seafood meal on our last night in Norway. We had a great evening, spent a lot of money (expected to) and left very happy. Next time through Oslo, I'll try somewhere else.
Our waiter gave us great guidance both on wines and menu selections. He was not afraid to say what he thought were not good choices. Much appreciated.
The kitchen has some skill. All plates were artfully presented with great contrasts of colors, textures and flavors. Everything was cooked perfectly. Portion sizes were spot on.
My scallop starter was delicious but not memorable. The three scallops were properly cooked but without noticeable sear. (Directly from the sous vide bag?) I remember the menu had mentioned something about bacon but none was visible. I assumed it was a component of the sauce or the scallops were cooked in bacon fat. It may be partly responsible for the flavor I could not quite identify that was intruding on the scallops natural wonderfulness.
I had arctic char as my main course, along with 4 of my friends. It was perfectly cooked, beautifully plated and delicious.
We ordered three desserts to share. All were delicious. I'm writing this three days after the meal. None made enough impression for me to remember now what they were.
So why wouldn't I go back. I guess because it wasn't quite as special as it seemed to be signalling it was. Here's one example, small but not alone. Because five of us ordered the char, it was easy to see that the staff that delivered our plates paid no attention to how the plate was turned. Given the gorgeous, off center presentation built by the kitchen, the appearance changed dramatically depending on how the plate was turned. There was a clear view the chef was going for and that first "wow" moment depended on it. That was a level of detail that got left off.
This is a very nice restaurant. We had a great time and left very happy. I just don't think the fine dining experience matched the fine...
Read moreMy husband and I came here for his birthday on the 23rd Feb. The food was ok, but lacked seasoning throughout the courses and for how quiet it was (13 guests), service was mediocre.
It took some time for our plates to be taken when we had finished the starter and around 20-25 mins for the main dishes to come out. I had ordered the shrimp and I found it very strange that they were not served with bread and you had to order it separately. My husband had the Skrei and was informed that it takes 15 mins for the 2nd round to come out so he asked for the 2nd one to be started straight away. When he was almost finished with his first plate a server came over and asked if he wanted them to start making the 2nd one. I could not finish all of my shrimp so I asked if it was possible to take the left overs with me. I was then informed that it was not possible due to them not having a takeaway licence. We have never heard of anything like this. Combined, my husband and I have been in the service industry for just over 40 years and have never experienced anything like this before. So the table was cleared and a little while later the same server came back and told us that she had spoken to her manager and informed us that she was wrong and you don't need a takeaway licence. This is something that should have been asked before the food was thrown away. I have spoken to a few people about our experience at your restaurant and none of them were surprised, saying “ A restaurant at Aker Brygge does not need to be good for guests to go.” We paid 2000kr and what a waste of money that was, we will never...
Read moreWhen it comes to seafood, we came to Lofoten with high expectations. However I found the menu a little limited. A bit too obvious. Coming from Ireland, I'm used to variety in fish. Having a catch of the day being cod was not adding much excitement to the menu. It should be noted that we visited over Easter Weekend. Not all options were available on the menu.
For starters we had the fish soup and the crab. Simple accompaniments meant it was true to the seafood.
My wife chose the cod for main. It was good, but very bland in terms of flavours. It could have used something subtle to compliment. The cod was served with the same sides as the oxcheek, which was not available on the night. This seems a little lazy. These are two very different main ingredients in terms of flavour, and the dish suffered as a result.
I chose the blue lobster. At 1250kr, it comes at quite a premium. I'm not sure it was worth it. The meat in the claws was tender and beautiful, but the main body was a bit too chewy. I've definitely enjoyed lobster more in the past.
To accompany, we chose a bottle of Chablis, the perfect combination with seafood.
For dessert, we had the petit four and chocolate dessert. My wife described it as the best part of the meal.
Finally they closed earlier than usual so we were asked to leave, rather than in our own time. A bit of a bad end considering my 3300kr bill.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed. It came recommended so I wonder if we just picked a bad time. There is no discount on the holiday weekend though, so standards...
