La Rana Dorada Casco — Restaurant in San Felipe

Such an institution in Casco Viejo, just the major drawback these days is the service (or lack of it). I went four times over two weeks. First was by myself at the bar, the bartender gave awesome service, I had a great burger, tried lots of delicious beers. Came back a couple days later and it was pretty busy, I couldn't get service unless I walked away from my table and waited at the bar. I decided to give the benefit of the doubt and left a completely undeserved 10% tip (standard in Panama) for the waitress anyway. She didn't say a single word or even look at me when returning my check. A week later, came with a friend and sat on the perfect people watching upper outside balcony. Had their excellent Pumpkin Ale but again, barely got service after sitting. Finally stopped by my last night to meet friends. Sat on outside patio and the servers actively avoided us while we tried to flag them down over a couple hours. I mean, I'd think the problem was ME except I was with so many various people at different times. Great food and drinks, yet its a shame we waited so long to get service. Once we got our food, we had to wait 20 minutes to get our drinks, instead of the other way around. Here in Panama we are accustomed to receiving a glass of water at restaurants if asked, so we asked, about 4 times, but got no water. We had to get up and go to the bar to pay because we waited 10 minutes for our bill to come after asking for it. At the bar we asked again if we could get a glass of water, considering each person got a whole pizza and a paid drink, however the response was so dissatisfied it led me to write this review. A young man called Alejandro S. very rudely told us we would have to wait for our water and that the bartenders were busy, I very calmly explained to him we waited 30 minutes for our water and we were paying customers, but he insisted we had to wait and turned his back on us, moving along to do something else. We went here based on high reviews, but found it to be average at best. They brought out a flight of sample beers which was cool. The beer was good (ipa), my girlfriends burger was good, but I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, Parida de la Rana dorada. Very small skews of meat, and a bunch of low budget fried things, the fried mozzarella balls were cold, and the calamari rings cold and very cheap. Left here feeling disappointed my meal wasn’t better for the $18 spent on my plate. Didn’t even eat it all because it wasn’t great. Skip that plate and get a burger. Tried to order the one desert item on the menu, brownie with ice cream, and go figure they didn’t have ice cream. Says artisanal on the menu but quite frankly there wasn’t much artisanal about it other than a great atmosphere. The place was nice, but they should step up their food game.
