We visited Taj Mahal Indian restaurant in Miraflores with high hopes, drawn by its glowing online reviews. Arriving just ten minutes after they opened at 12:30 PM, we placed an order that included pakoras, mango and masala lassis, masala chai, and several main dishes like chole bhatura, chicken karahi, chicken tikka masala, and rajma. However, the experience quickly turned frustrating as service delays and miscommunications began to pile up. Nearly 30 minutes after ordering, we were informed that the chole bhatura was unavailable—a surprising issue so early in the day—and we reluctantly replaced it with muttar paneer.
By 1:30 PM, we still hadn’t received any appetizers or drinks, despite several follow-ups with the waitstaff. Other tables that arrived after us were already being served, adding to our frustration. When food finally started arriving, it came in a completely chaotic order. The chicken dishes showed up first, ahead of any drinks or appetizers, and one of the lassis was substituted without asking. The manager, who was also serving, later explained via a translation app that they were short staffed that day, leaving him to help on tables as well. His apology was heartfelt, and he made an effort to make amends, offering complimentary items and addressing our concerns as best he could. While his explanation added some context to the chaotic service, it didn’t completely salvage the experience.
When it came to the food itself, the quality was mixed. The chole, a dish of chickpeas served with rice, was easily the standout, with rich, authentic flavors and perfectly cooked ingredients. The pakoras, when they eventually arrived, were also tasty; the dash of chaat masala on the pakoras was a nice touch. The chicken dishes were less impressive; the chicken in the karahi and tikka masala tasted similar, as if the same tikka chicken had been used for both. The paneer butter masala was overly sweet, and while the flavors were pleasant, it lacked the balance and depth we were hoping for. The lassis were solid, with the masala lassi being especially refreshing, though the substitution of the mango lassi with a strawberry one without consultation was disappointing despite the gesture of making it complimentary. The chai was overwhelming in its sweetness.
Overall, while the food was fresh and not overly oily, the inconsistencies in preparation, significant delays, and mismanagement of orders overshadowed. Taj Mahal shows potential, and the manager’s efforts to rectify the situation were appreciated, but the overall experience fell short of the high expectations set by the reviews. Perhaps it was an off day due to staffing issues, but for us, it was a...
Read moreI’d like to start by saying that the food was lovely, very tasty and well spiced, even if the portions were on the smaller side.
However, I was unfortunately disappointed by the service that sadly marred our experience. We ordered everything once we had sat down, in Spanish with the waiter and he repeated our order back to us, all correct. From there I’m not sure what went wrong - only 2/3s of our order came out. We had to ask twice for our second rice (we ordered 4 curries and only one came out). We also had to ask twice for our poppadoms - every curry house I have ever been to has sent these out first. We had to ask three times for the raita. When we still hadn’t received it once we had finished all of our food, we cancelled the order and complained. I understand that it was fairly busy, but I have both visited and worked in busier restaurants and understand that it’s not hard to get these simplicities correct - getting a pot of yoghurt raita does not take 20 minutes.
Unfortunately the disappointment did not end there - I believe one of the chefs, if not head chef came out to talk to us but our complaints were met with him making excuses for it being busy, that we are not Spanish so his waiter couldn’t understand us (we ordered in Spanish), that he sends orders out table by table (understandable way of working, but clearly not as we only received half our order) and made us feel as though it was our fault. No effort was made to reconcile this poor experience. Even trying to pay three ways was too much for our waiter at first. I would like to extend my thanks however to the other waiter who was clearly trying to help us the best he could despite not having initially served us.
Sadly I would not be able to recommend this restaurant based on this poor customer service, despite the...
