This is probably the most famous and celebrated "Picanteria" in Arequipa, catering both locals and tourists alike. The ambience is great, and it almost feels like walking back in tine or visiting.a "picanteria museum". If by looking at the menu you feel that most dishes cost twice as much as they should, it is because, even if it not specified, they are sharing platters, easily feeding two or three people. The menu is not extensive, which is a good thing, but also rather "cryptic" if you are not familiar with local traditions, with dishes like the "Americano", which is a mixed platter of local speciality, but the menu tells you nothing about what they are. Some dishes, like the "Cuy" (guinea pig) might be a bit of a culture shock for some foreigners, as the guinea pig is still very "recognizable when it comes on the plate. The shrimp soup "chupe de camarones" is a "safer" choice if you are easily impressed. All dishes are very traditional and have rather strong flavors, making this an interesting and authentic experience. On the down side, service is rather slow and dishes came to the table when they are ready rather than all together (not at all uncommon in Latin America) so in a group of people one or two might be eating while the others wait for some 20-30 minutes. For my taste everything was good and definitely interesting, but...
Read more"La Nueva Palomino" is one of the main traditionals restaurants in Arequipa ... but, I would like to say: don´t forget that you sell a EXPERIENCE, not only food!!. Take a minute to take the people to the table from the entry door, not make them RUN for the table ... simple, first to arrive, first to receive service. My family group was 11 people and the receipt was very high ... the prices are over the average of the fancy / tourist Arequipa restaurants, but it is not a problem for us if the EXPERIENCE would be high too.
As an example: I had a problem with a dish (unexpected "thing" into the food) and the answer was only "to replace", no courtesy, no error recognition, nothing ... I had the same bad experience in other restaurant and the administrator / owner came very worry to apologize and offer courtesy for the big mistake!! I requested one mineral water bottle with a little lemon cup (20 ml of "zumo de limon"), and guess what ... I paid S/.5 for that!! ... Recommendation: on top of the cost of the water bottle, add the lemon cost, very simple!!! ... no show the "lemon cost" ... don´t be greedy
Nueva Palomino: do not take a risk with your reputation and your recognition ... DO NOT FORGET, always, the most important in every business is the CUSTOMER and the...
Read moreNot a good place for tourists. We went to this place because it was recommended by our guide. Our party of 4 arrived at this restaurant around 1:30 pm. The menu is very limited and hard to figure out what the dishes are like. We had to Google many of the dishes and ask a lot of questions which seemed to annoy the server. The restaurant had run out of a lot of food and unfortunately they did not have any of our first 4 choices of dishes. We were not warned about this when we checked in or during our 30 minutes wait time to be seated. Our food was brought at different times, 30 minutes went by from the fist and 4th dish being served. Only one of us liked our dishes, we didn’t eat the other 3, we did not like the taste. The chupe de camarones (shrimp) had the whole camarón, legs, etc. Very hard to peel, so I asked that they be peeled in the kitchen, the waitress said it could not be done. The restaurant is huge but only had one woman and one man bathroom stall. We suggested to the guide not to recommend this restaurant to tourists. This was our only negative experience during our 10 day...
