I recently dined at Xin Tian Di, a quaint Chinese restaurant settled within a hotel that had good reviews and boasted about authentic Chinese food. Upon arrival, the ambiance was warm and inviting, with soft lighting and traditional and contemporary decor. The restaurant was quiet and appeared to have only 3 or 4 tables seated at the time.
The menu offered a delightful array of options, and we opted to order various dishes and enjoy the meal family style. When the food arrived, the food was hot, very neatly plated and served. The food was authentic and packed full of balanced flavors in every bite. The noodles were not overcooked, the broccoli was blanched perfectly, the green tea was served hot. The pork was tender and flavorful.
However, the experience took a turn when it came to the service. From the moment we were seated, our server seemed rushed and disinterested. It took ages for someone to take our order, and once our food arrived, it was as if our server had forgotten about us entirely. We weren't asked if we wanted dessert.
We constantly looked around for our server, trying to request for the check. Several employees walked by our table three times, and every time we asked for the check, they barely acknowledged the request.
After requesting the check multiple times and waiting 15 minutes after and nobody walking over to our table despite constant waving someone over. We decided to get up and walk to the hostess to pay for the meal and leave. One employee ran to the hostess and asked her not to let us leave without paying, and she said it in tagalog assuming because we looked like foreigners we wouldnt understand. I quickly let her know we were not looking to leave without paying, I showed her my credit card in hand. I asked another employee to come over and confirm I had requested the check multiple times. She didn't even apologize for stating we tried to leave without paying.
At this point, we are attracting unwanted attention. As a foreigner who has been to many restaurants around the world and multiple times in Manila, I have not encountered such bad service.
While the food was fantastic and worthy of return visits, the poor service left a sour taste in our mouths. It’s disappointing when such good food is overshadowed by a lack of attention and care from the staff. I truly hope they can address this issue because the food...
Read moreI came here with the big promise for "Authentic" Chinese food. In reality it was very disappointing because there was nothing, absolutely nothing authentic in the food, everything "perfectly" adjusted for the Filipino taste buds.
I really wanted the Dim Sum buffet but for someone who doesn't eat pork and out of 50+ Dim Sum types, only 5 are without pork, it wasn't a good option. Instead we ordered salted fish fried rice, two chicken dishes, one vegetarian dish and one Dim Sum (out of the no-pork limited variety). The latter was the best. The fried rice was OK. All other 3 dishes were a huge disappointment. The chicken dishes came with a very blunt gravy dip, no way you can call it authentic Chinese. The 3 main dishes had sweet & sour flavor to them, that's why I claim it's all adjusted for Filipino taste and far of being Authentic Chinese as far as Philippines is from China.
Prices were outrageous for the level of food, even though I had 40% off on the menu prices, 2,000 Pesos still felt like way too much for what we were served. Had I not been in China dozens of times, I would have probably appreciated it more, but cannot sell food under "Authentic" cover when it is your average so called Filipino-Chinese level of food.
Giving 2 stars and not 1 because the servers were courteous and knowledgeable of the menu. Service wasn't high level though. We were promised complementary peanuts while waiting for the food, and had to make a follow-up for it 3-4 times (when the restaurant was almost empty). Also a waiter shook my hand when I was about to start eating with "Eid Mubarak" greeting even though I said I'm not Muslim, and mind you we are still during Corona times... I found it hilarious but definitely not professional.
If you look for authentic Chinese food in Manila, go elsewhere to the places where the Real mainland China...

The Xiao Long Bao at Xin Tian Di were a revelation. The thin, delicate wrappers held a delicious broth and a savory meat filling. The Siomai was another highlight. Generously filled with a blend of tender pork and succulent shrimp, these dumplings were flavorful and satisfying. The Hargao was exceptional. The translucent wrapper was delicate yet sturdy, encasing plump, juicy shrimp. Each bite was a burst of fresh...
