I rarely write negative reviews, but the behavior of the staff made this experience impossible to overlook...
Despite the restaurant being half-empty, we were seated at a cramped table near the kitchen and restrooms corridor—not exactly a suitable space for the intimate atmosphere of a dinner date. Hoping the food we red about in the online reviews would redeem the evening, we stayed. Unfortunately lacking finesse and taste it fell far short.
Both appetizers were flavorless and uninspired, while the off-menu Beef Wellington was inconsistently cooked and poorly executed with mediocre sides. All dishes hardly meeting their price point. Not to mention, we were never even asked how we wanted the beef cooked... If the bread is the best part of the meal that says enough...
Once we tried to politely share our slight disappointment when repeatedly asked for feedback, the staff became very defensive, offering explanations about the high prices of the locally sourced ingredients they use. The lengthy discussions, trying to prove us wrong didn't make the evening any more pleasant or any of the dishes less underwhelming. Sadly we found nothing special or surprising about this place. Maitre D's nice gesture trying to somehow impress us- complimentary dessert- ironically the best part of the meal- was overshadowed by a snarky remark from the waiter suggesting the “real surprise” would’ve been charging us for that dessert.
Normally, I’d consider returning to explore the menu further and to give it another try, but the condescending attitude of the waiting staff at the end of our visit ensures we won’t be back to waste another nice evening...
If they love their food as much as they're convinced it's great I guess they don't need customers at all to keep the...
Read moreI try to take in one tasting menu on my visits to different cities around the world. Warsaw was no other, and after some research, I decided to go with Opasly Tom. Given the type of restaurants serving tasting menus and the price, I have high expectations of the food, ambience, and service. While the food (outside one dish) and ambience were excellent, Opasly Tom fell short on the service.
First, things start to go south right off the start. When I arrived at my reserved time, I was taken into the lounge for dinner. I was the only one there; it wasn't nearly the same experience as being in the restaurant. I felt stuffed into a back room as the manager's laptop was set up on the table beside me. I subsequently asked if I could be seated in the main restaurant, and I was told it would be about twenty minutes until the table would be ready. While I appreciate it isn't always possible to have seating reading at the reserved time, I would have appreciated the option of waiting in the lounge with a drink for a table rather than beginning my meal there. Second, the breaks between dishes were up to 20 minutes, and for a single diner, that was too long. When I brought this to my waiter, he said the experience was meant to be 2 to 3 hours. This cadence makes sense for a table of two or more but not for one. Unfortunately, after mentioning this to the waiter, the last two dishes came out too quickly…Third, bottles of water were not kept off the table, which was fine as long as the glasses remained full. I had to ask twice for water. Finally, when I left, the bathroom was out of paper towels.
Some of these things may seem trivial, but I have become accustomed to flawless experiences with tasting menus. Fortunately, what I have mentioned above can be...
Read moreThe food was outright incredible and original (we had the non-vegetarian tasting menu). The service was very personalized to our request – my partner had organized this as a surprise and she specified that I was italian, that she wanted me to get to know more about Polish cuisine and culture, and that she would like to celebrate with me in a romantic setting. They met these requests well beyond our expectations, putting us in the privacy of the 'intimate room', presenting us with a book-album about the history of the restaurant, speaking fluent English even when describing the intricacies of the dishes, and even adding out of the menu a surprise dessert that was italian-inspired with a birthday-candle! The entire experience was very personalized and much more. The service was top-notch; not only with great expertise but they were the perfect balance of attentive without being at all intrusive. They always came at just the right times, which is especially important for tasting menus. This is definitely a restaurant to come back to, even without special occasion; any occasion to eat here is itself a special...
