Well where should I start: We came into the restaurant which is very small by the way, and my polish girlfriend asked if they had a table for two. The waiter said yes but only near the entrance. We dont like to sit there, because the door is always open and its kind of windy. I asked in polish what about the table next to the window? He recognised that I am not from here and asked me where I am from. I said from Austria. After that he said no problem he will clean the table for us. This was very weird and kind of discriminating against my polish girlfriend. If she asks it s not possible, but when a foreigner asks its ok? I mean come on. After that the waiter told us that we will have to wait at maximum 40 minutes for everything. We experienced this the day before and where used to it and said ok . Then we ordered, I a lemonade and ribs, and my girlfriend some chicken schnitzel. After about 30 minutes my "lemonade" came which only consisted of sugar and water and two slices of lemon. It was not enjoyable. You could feel the sugar on your teeth. It felt like diabetes. We returned the lemonade to get a real and fresh one. They said they will do it. After about one hour and 10 minutes we asked the kitchen personell where our food was. In short they said they have so much to do they forgot about us. Also the new lemonade never came. Then the waiter also came and told us that he said at the beginning that we need to wait at least one hour and that they forgot our order. They never apologised for anything. Very disappointing and a waste of time....
Read moreIt was our second visit - have been dreaming about returning on our next trip to Poland from the US, and we were glad to discover it was just as magical and delicious as we had remembered it to be! It has now been recommended to us, independently and unprompted, by three Warsaw natives as their favorite restaurant in town, so it’s not just a foreign opinion. Excellent service (and in very good English, a bonus for us) and every dish from starters to desserts was so beautiful and flavorful we literally wrote home about them. Wild mushroom soup, sour rye soup, brown trout in dill sauce, duck with roast apples, rabbit in dill cream, warm apple pie, the most airy and delicate cheesecake…I am still stuffed and yet I wish I could eat them again right now! (Don’t, for goodness’ sake, because portions are very generous!) Especially perfect during the winter holiday season due to the lovely...
Read moreWant to try some Polish food? You simply must come here! From our week holiday in Poland, this was without doubt the most amazing restaurant we visited. Small but informal, really good value. Excellent service and great standard of English. These guys totally understand hospitality and you can taste their passion in the food, not like most of the tourist traps in the locality. The decor is also really rustic and interesting and warm. Food: we chose traditional Polish pork schnitzel and chicken breast. Both were really good, but the vegetables and sauces that came with the dishes were superb. Great attention to detail. We ordered a Polish Apple pie for dessert and asked for two spoons and they didn't make any fuss about that, which was nice. Thoroughly recommended. If we ever return to Warsaw, we will definitely be coming back to Portretowa to try some more of...
