When four fish-craving wanderers found themselves drifting along the Algarve coast in early May, warm breeze in tow and soy sauce in their veins, there was only one port of call: Fish Tail, a Japanese fusion gem nestled in sunny Albufeira. And let me tell you, this place reeled us in from the very first bite.
The star of the show? The Fish Tail Special Chef Platter—a 56-piece leviathan of a sushi selection, and quite frankly, the stuff of sashimi dreams. This wasn’t just dinner; this was a cathedral of raw fish. A palace of palate pleasure. A rice-structured monument to the sushi gods. Each roll was a love letter wrapped in seaweed and sealed with a kiss of wasabi. From buttery tuna to silky salmon, everything was fresh enough to slap you with a fin and ask what you’re doing in its ocean.
But the story doesn’t stop at the sushi. Oh no, we cast our nets wider.
Prawn tempura? Light, crispy, and gone in seconds—like they swam straight from the fryer into our mouths. Wagyu beef gyoza? Little pockets of joy, juicy enough to make a grown man weep into his soy. Yaki udon prawn noodles? Wok-tossed perfection—saucy, slippery, and soul-hugging. And the miso soup? While I didn’t try it myself, one sip from our party and the verdict was in: “Class.” In a world of lukewarm miso mediocrity, this was pure umami delight.
Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate the chopstick selection. Whether you’re a seasoned sushi samurai or a fumbling fork traitor, Fish Tail’s got you covered. From the standard issue sticks to the training-wheel-friendly clamped beginner pairs, it’s a thoughtful touch that proves they’re not just fishing for compliments—they genuinely care.
To drink, we stayed on the soft side (even sushi deserves a designated driver), but the quality of the food was enough to send us swimming in euphoria without any sake required.
Final verdict? Fish Tail is a must-visit for any sushi enthusiast floundering around the Algarve. Service was snappy, the atmosphere was laid-back but stylish, and the fish? Fresher than your mate’s Tinder bio pic. We left full, happy, and with just enough room for dessert—next time.
If you’re in the area, follow the scent of soy and the call of the ocean. Fish Tail will...

I'll start this review by saying that I didn't come to Albufeira planning to eat sushi. That said, I'm very glad I did! I would recommend every dish ordered.
Many of the dishes served were aesthetically beautiful, many of them tasted beautiful, but the pork ramen I had is for people who are HUNGRY.
Food: The cucumber and cheese gunkan was a sophisticated and delicious taste, quickly devoured. I have eaten at a few sushi places in the UK and I haven't eaten anything like that before, same goes for the soft shell crab tamaki (delicious and filling). The Vietnamese vegetable roll tasted good and was very well presented, but my partner preferred the taste of the Fish Tail vegetarian roll. As for the pork ramen, it was exactly what I wanted and expected: a filling bowl of good tasting pork and noodles.
Atmosphere: I don't know why this restaurant had so few customers, presumably they haven't yet had the chance to get the word out (January is definitely off-season in Albufeira). The background music was fine, but there were occasional ads for Spotify premium (lol). In the later evening a staff member turned on a gas heater for extra warmth - as a UK resident I was already comfortable but that was a nice touch.
Service: The staff were very helpful navigating a nut and mushroom allergy for my partner - we made informed choices and had no problems. The food service was perhaps just a little slower than I was expecting, but then again, that's probably inevitable considering the very high food quality. Ordering drinks and getting the bill happened quite quickly.
Price: Coming from the UK, I think the price compared to the portion sizes is slightly better value than I expected and better than compared to nearby restaurants, but comparing price to quality, I think this restaurant is excellent value. This is the kind of very good sushi I probably wouldn't be able to afford...
Read moreThis place is a Hidden gem 💎. Hidden away from the old town, but still close to the center.
At first glance, the cool, futuristic, neon catches your sight. When you walk by, you can sense that this place is futuristic, but cozy - urban like inside. When you look inside, this place has a lot of cool art, beautiful decorations and the staff here is lovely.
My wife and I wanted to get something light for dinner, we weren't that hungry this night. We ate quite lately, so the kids were fed off at McDonalds. Anywho. We wanted real food. Real quality and something UMAMI. We weren't disappointed..
We ordered two different kinds of sushi, one was one of their signature dishes - oh my god. This - I can totally recommend. I've tasted Wagyu before, but their Wagyu sushi, combination of Umami flavors, salt, acid, sweetness.. the topping, the perfect torched beef, cooked to perfection. Oh my god! It was good. My wife and I shared the Wagyu beef sushi and she had their New Style California Roll which was really great too.
I also tried their Tonkatsu Ramen. Wow. Just wow. That intense, flavourful broth, tender pork .. and those soy-marinated eggs were so delicious. The noodles were cooked to perfection and I slurped every little drop. Almost licked the bowl..
If you are looking for high quality, exceptional taste and a nice cool urban fusion meal, packed with umami and love. This is your place to go.
My only problem was, that there was so many things I would have loved to try..
Will definitely recommend visiting this place if you love fish, sushi, Ramen, pokebowls and steaks. These guys, knows how to cook. And they're good at it.
Thank you for a delicious meal. @foodbymilbo -...
