Bar "O Avô" — Restaurant in Funchal

Canteen food, sorry, but the quality is not good. Fish filled that was supposed to be crusty was soggy and soft. It tasted like microwaved food.

OK for having drinks, but for food not recommended.

Edit after owner's reply: I wish you had taken the same care to cook our food that you take for your communication. I did jot mention a fish that my friend returned, as I only wanted ti talk about my experience, you did. And since you did, allow me to comment on that as well: a friend ordered a daurade, and the fish smelled old, she had eaten fresh veggies ( batavia salad and tomato and carrot) and as she started to eat fish she could not even swallow it. Allow me to mention another friend as well, who ordered veggie platter, it was half canned food half fast food.

You are better of if you continue looking for a place to eat and do not settle...

After checking of few good reviews I was expecting truly outstanding food. Today we've been a little bit disappointed as we had cold fish meals, mess with order (different wine, no soups) ... BUT our host was very nice, friendly and bubbly persona. He is just an honest man with lots of stories to tell. Place has an extraordinary atmosphere and character, especially football clubs scarf's collection . Ther is a menu on the standing board outside but generally it was three dishes to choose: fish, pork or omelette which is fine if you are hungry. Prices for meals 7-9€. Good wines, whatever you order,...

Tucked away in a little street just off the sea front of Funchal you'll find this little gem - the welcome you receive from the heavily tattooed owner is superb and his humour made us feel so at home. Obviously, many will already be aware of the famous football scarf collection that can be seen inside - apparently a world record - and should you bring along a scarf he does not have then you may claim a free meal with wine in exchange. Food was good and the sangria even better. A fun midday lunch which I know I will enjoy again. I will be returning next year with a scarf that I know he does not have...
