I am no expert on Madeira poncha but I can detect that this is one delicious alcoholic drink ! And one not to take lightly ;) Things to know about poncha: it's made from run made in Madeira, it must be freshly made in a bar or restaurant as it's made with fresh orange juice and based on rum therefore bottled poncha will not do! Also poncha that you will see standing in a jar will not do either. Rei da poncha does fresh poncha the traditional way right in front of your eyes and it how it should be. It comes in many flavours: original (with orange juice, honey, rum, lime) and strawberry, lime, passion fruit, tangerine, absinth, tomato and kiwi. The place is always almost packed so it's a statement in it self and a clue to visit earlier rather than later. If you do not find a place to sit, you can always do take away poncha. It's right next to old town of Madeira and it's well worth venteruning out 5 minutes to try this great drink. The service is great - very nice, calm but serving fast staff that is eager to help your choice with information. At €3.50 you are in for a treat if you do like to sample alcoholic drinks. I have not eaten there so can not...
Read moreWhat a great gem, hidden on the corner of Bico do Pimenta / Rampa do Cidrão street, Funchal. Whether a meeting point or just people watching in the center of town, behind the Sé cathedra with plenty of late afternoon sunshine, will do you good. Stop, sit and try their delicious 'poncha's' with a prego!
REI DO PONCHA ( King of poncha) is one of the best 'poncha' bar's that takes pride & detail to every drink. 'Poncha' is a traditional Madeira cocktail muddled by hand, with alcohol, fresh fruit & honey.
I have frequented here many times & return!
The food & beverages to service & hygiene with price, is excellent and great value. It's a small place, so at times it can be popular during the day & feeding the pigeons some peanuts is tradition too. Definitely highly recommended and on my top 5 bars par excellent throughout Madeira. But it's a...
Read moreWe had a lunch here and were in the area a couple of different nights for drinks. The experience every time was great. The location is fantastic, being quite central.
The lunch we had was really tasty. Exactly what you'd want from a snack bar - great quality, delicious food, at a relatively reasonable price. We had the beefsteak sandwich and a garlic butter bolo de caco - over a week on and I'm still thinking about it!
Drinks are also not too badly priced though definitely more expensive than some other local bars. For the atmosphere you get here at most times of the day and the friendly service it's definitely worth it. The beers, nikita, and poncha are all worth trying.
For tourists, note that you need to have cash as they don't accept international cards but this is only a small annoyance and the rest of the experience more than...
