I’m extremely disappointed with our recent visit to Restaurante GRUTA Madeira. While we understand that our group of 6 arrived just over an hour before closing, we were met with an unwelcoming, grumpy attitude from the staff. After ordering drinks, they immediately took away our menus, seemingly to prevent us from ordering anything else, despite having plenty of time until closing. It took about 20-30 minutes for our cocktails to arrive. When we followed up, thinking they may have forgotten our order, we were told dismissively that cocktails take a long time to make. However, the restaurant was almost empty, with only about 5 covers when we arrived, and we couldn’t see anyone else ordering cocktails. We assume the excessive time it took to prepare our drinks was likely an attempt to delay any further orders. We had an Aperol Spritz, three Espresso Martinis, and two other simple drinks. While the Espresso Martinis were decent, the other cocktails were poorly made, and the Aperol Spritz and other drinks were so misproportioned that two of our guests felt unwell afterward. As we were leaving, one of the staff members was dumping what appeared to be mop water across the entrance, forcing all six of us to jump around bleach-soaked puddles as it ran down the path – a very unpleasant way to end the evening. The only reason for the 2 stars is the nice decor and the somewhat decent Espresso Martinis. Otherwise, we will likely not be returning.

When you first look at this restaurant, you can’t believe what you’re seeing because it’s actually carved into the side of the hill, which is solid rock. Then you walk inside and you look at the ceiling and you see the wire mesh holding back the rocks and you’re just blown away by the creativeness and how beautiful this restaurant is. And you sit down with the menu that’s probably 12 pages long and you have no idea what to order What our experience is quite amazing! My wife had the octopus with the rice, which I don’t know what it was called and I had the fries and the beef in the mushroom sauce that was just spectacular. The drinks were amazing. Recommend the Pimms drink! The service was excellent, the food is spectacular, and the waiters have a really good sense of humor. And the view from the restaurant is spectacular. You just have to try this place.

Highly recommend their goat Picado! This was so delicious and such big portion for €24. Seriously, it was so big, probably enough for two. I love lamb but never had goat before so was worried, but it was so tender and succulent, and wasn’t strong taste (to me and my friends). The potatoes were also very yummy. You have to order their juice! My friend ordered a mango juice and was so good, so I ordered one as dessert. The waiter served me with an interesting smile and said “your fresh mango juice”, it turned out that it indeed had fresh mango 😂 (they just tried to be fun as my friend didn’t have it previously). You can’t miss it and it was only €4! The ‘old man’ who served us was so funny and made jokes all the time, making our last dinner in Madeira a happy ending! The restaurant is by the coast so beautiful view at night. I highly recommended it!

Hey Guys, Pay Attention please ! It may be helpful for all of who go because of their ambience and hype iä was there because of their reputation and Name and i thought that i give a chance to me to eat there although i am just for a Week here in Madeira before coming to Madeira i googled almost everything what to eat and what not !! so Today on 15 April 2024 around 21.00 we were there we habe ordered Tomato Soup and Traditional Bread as Starter that Bread we have is too crunchy ! And then we waited we waited we waited for another Starter Soup but it didn't come so i have complaint their waiter that we are waiting and our bread is now cold and hard enough to beat the one with Stone ! Wait this is not enough Story ! Now come the most disappoiting experience of my life ! We have ordered as Main course this hyped one Shrimps with cheesesauce it costs 19.80 Euro and Basmatirice you get it was uncooked when i again complaint to them they took it and warm it and give it to me ! And saying they cooked it again but infact they are not paying attention to the costumer and their issue instead of accepting it and giving compensation or reimbursement they didn't do anything and took fullprice from us ! And the Manager or i guess Head was too rude to me ! Seriously Germans visited them Frequently because of ambience and largw portions but they totally disappointed me my Wife . We had a really worst Experience there !! I want my Money back !! Because of unfriendly attitude !!!!! Not...

Customer service was really poor, one of the waiters had an inadecuate behaviour and said that the octopus sometimes was “big” and sometimes “small”. Afterwards he was throwing the dishes onto our table. About the food, nothing out of the ordinary, the only thing we honestly enjoyed was the bolo do caco and the bacalhau croquettes. But the Octopus and Espetada was sort of disappointing, they didn’t ask for the desired term of the meat. Presentation wasn’t special either. Mojito Strawberry was too expensive for what it actually is. Also the environment was an utter disaster, we had a group of 20 persons next to us and a music at a very high volume. We couldn’t talk throughout the whole dinner (but I guess this particular issue slips away from the restaurant’s “hands”) -ish. Finally, the grute itself isn’t that surprising, it has been refurnished and there is nothing really interesting to look at. It is a shame that I cannot give a higher score, I would like to give more as our intentions, references and expectations from this place were much higher…. We ended up having ice cream at McDonalds as we didn’t want to spend more time and money in this place. Sorry… hope that other customers get a better treatment and...
